Title: My new chassis
Post by: Smart51 on April 04, 2008, 02:58:41 PM
Here are a few pictures of my new microcar chassis.  I'd hoped to have finished it by now but I guess that's how things go.

Great job, wish I could weld as well as you. I can't wait to see how you'll design the body.

Hi

The car is looking really good, what is the power plant, and where did you source the steering rack?

Kind regards
Adrian

The engine is from a piaggio x8.  It is a 250cc fuel injected single and makes 22 BHP, enough for about 80 MPH flat out or a 50 MPH cruise.  The steering rack is from a Dihatsu Hijet, which is more or less the same as a bedford rascal or a suzuki super carry.  I got it, and most of everything else, off eBay.

Hi

I am pulling some info together to try and calculate weights of the two sub-frames whic will hold the front suspension/steering and engine/drive train, do you know how heavy the X8 engine/gearbox is?

Piaggio claim 36kg for the assembled quasar engine and CVT.  That seems to include the throttlebody / fuel injector / ECU assembly.  Mine felt a lot heavier than that when I moved it but it did have the rear wheel, brake and exhaust fitted.

I've been busy over the last few weeks making the internal body panels.  Here are a couple of pics of my progress.

I had to take it out of the garage today whilst the owner moved some stuff, so I took it for a little ride up the grassy access lane.  It power slides like a demon up wet muddy slopes :D

Looking good! What are you making the body of?

I'm making it out of fibreglass.  My first choice would be polypropylene but making tools for vacuum forming large sheets is a bit beyond the scope of the garden shed.

Here is a rendered drawing of what I plan to make.
