Title: Scootacar Wobble
Post by: P50 on August 10, 2006, 01:34:27 PM
I have a minor problem on my Mk1.  When I brake to stop I get a rhythmical wobble through the bars.

It happens as I draw to the stop at 5-10MPH. I've had the drums skimmed. Everything looks OK.  Could it be a wheel out of true? A tyre?  Going along at 40 it's fine. Only as I slow down. I would have thought an oval drum would have given me a pulse through the pedal. But I have none.

Can't work it out. Any ideas? Ive had 3 Mk1's and this is the only one to do it...

Perry, I suggest you make contact with Steven Boyd on scootacar@btinternet.com he should be able to advise you.  He might even answer your query when he writes in the next RUMCAR NEWS. Jean

Hello Jean,

He thought brakes might need adjusting but I'm not so sure..

Thanks for the reply. I'll examine the entire set up shortly and report my findings..

My car has now all been sorted wobble wise.

Seems one kingpin was totally shot. All the balljoints had a degree of play. And the wheel bearings weren't too clever either.

I now have 4 recon'd trackrod ends (a fantastic job which means they came back as new with new dirt boots, a grease nipple in each one and crucially new slightly oversized pin cups and pins to remove the wear. They should last another 50 odd years) a new kingpin and front and rear bearings.

It's a totally different car to drive. Much more direct steering. Doesn't seem to wander. Even the braking seems to have stabilised and doesn't pull.

All in all I suppose it drives as a new Mk1 would have done.  A big thanks to to Phil who has the facilities to fix it.

Top stuff!  8)
