Title: Slow-Run at the National
Post by: Stuart Cyphus on May 23, 2008, 05:33:23 PM
We all know what Saturday at the National is for don't we? That's road-run day!  ;D  Come what may, myself & the Mini-Comtesse will be there at the head of the line, but there is a certain ammount of enevitibility about what will happon when the flag drops. Everyone else (Fiat 500's, Bond Bug's, Messerschmitt's et al) will hare off into the distance the moment the cortage turns out of the gate & leave me standing. Then I'll get to the first hill (and there's a lot of 'em in Wiltshire!) & totaly fail to get up it....

However, just recently myself & Grant Kearney have been discussing the possibility of an alternative "Slow-Run" on the Saturday of the National, for all those extra-small, extra-slow & just plain extra-silly extra-micro microcars which must all be itching to do a run but for the certainty of being left for dead. The route will only be about 10 - 15 miles long (plenty far enough at 17mph) & (relitively) flat.

So, how about it all you little sub-100cc (& eletric) things out there? Lets get some numbers together & really make an event of this! Perry, get one of your Peels working properly & down to Wiltshire! John, where's that Curser? Grant, I'll promise to stop twisting your arm if you bring the Manx Bamby. Who else has got anything small & slow?  This Rally's suposed to be all about "micro", so lets get some the microest of micros out on that Slow-Run......

The Mini-Comtesse wants some company when it totally fails to get up the first one in forty-thousand slope, if only to help push it up!!!!

Perry, get one of your Peels working properly & down to Wiltshire!

Errr, they're both at this moment sort of in slumber..
However, I have an utterly adorable Ligier JS4. I love my Ligier because it looks like a moon buggy. So guess what I intend to bring along? Have no fear Mr Cyphus I have a san permis for a special occasion and all being well it will partake....   Right best I buy a battery and check the JS4 for soundness.....

That'll do nicely Perry.  :-*  (It's not Nick D's old one by any chance is it?)  What else is there out there? Is it my hearing or did I hear some floppings of a Flipper a few days ago, or was it just the distant braying of a Donkey?   ???

Stuart,
At the last but one East Anglian Rally we had a brace of runs, The first ( call it the fast run) one left at 10.30 in the morning and left for the coast on a 35 mile run ,The second (slow run with AC petites ,bambys etc) left at 1.00 pm on their 12 mile run and met the Faster cars on the way back from the coast at Parham air museum for tea and cakes, Each run was routed to suit their respective needs and all the cars were gathered together for a photo oppertunity when they met up at Parham,
However we had the organisational skills of Bob Cotton to arrange it all.
good luck ,there's two breakdown routes to keep a eye on!

No it's not.  Mine came from the South of France and has 400 miles from new.  However a Peel might rear its obscure head....  Watch'a dis space'a.....

Hi All

I think the short slow run is a great idea, perhaps there could be 2 circuits starting at the same place, stopping for coffe or lunch at the same place and ending at the same place, with the larger faster cars doing a bit more of a tour.

Bit more work for the organisers, but what do you think?

Cursor not even collected yet  ???

So then, the National is about two weeks away now, and as several RUM folk may have overheard at Jean's Open Day, the Mini-Comtesse is sadly out of action for the foreseeable as regards road use, mostly due to recalcitrant brakes and bolshy MoT testers.

But fear not folks, the RUM's resident favourer of the extra-small & extra-slow has a further ace up his sleeve and thanks to the generosity of it's actulal owner,  :-*  WILL have an alternative vehicle on the start line come Saturday morning. I'm not going to give too much away about what it is  ;)  (turn up & see for yourself) but I will just casully mention that the vehicle I have been very kindly loaned, and which is currently in my shed awaiting the day, is red in colour, rather plasticky, and has rather a lot of Perspex making up the top of it....    :o

So then Mr Cyphus, you have seen the light at long last then ?.  You obviously know what all the fuss is about now.  Well look forward to seeing you and the 'Top Secret Trident'.  Will you managed to upstage the mafia by getting the blue Mopetta in time ?.  Lets hope so  ;)

JS4's not functioning!

Will be in my KR. Which in 3 weeks time will too be probably not functioning...

Be possative P50!   I dont know which car to take, the Inter or the schmitt, if I take the Inter it will be nice to show it off but will not be able to go on the runs as its not registered yet. Take the schmitt and will be able to enjoy the run outs but everyone and his dog will be there with a schmitt! Unless, someone kindly offers to take me on the runs as a passenger. Dont all shout at once!

Well Stuart, IF I can get there, and IF my van is on the road again in time and IF lots of complications are resolved I might be able to bring a suitable, infamous and noisy candidate for your slow run, and I think it will probably struggle to keep up with ANYONE else!

Coo! I thought you were going to let the cat out of the bag just then!!!  Look after her. Don't want to see the plastic broken or paint scratched. Have fun.

I'll try not to scratch it. After all, you don't want to have to respray it again after all this time....   ;)  :-*

Is this what you had in mind for the short run?! Looks like some kind of sans permis banger racing, not suitable for peels! Blob. The pictures are from Roland Duret, I dont know where the event took place but the observation was made by Stuart I think a while back that the french dont yet appeciate there later sans permis cars and I think this just about proves it! Does look fun though as you say. Did anyone notice the Mini comtess policecar in picture two!

Hi Everyone.

I have a change of plan re going to the National this weekend.

Due to the fact that the rain is so heavy, if there is an improvement by late tonight (Friday) i will be driving up first thing on Saturday and staying for the day. If the rail is still the same tonight I won't be coming.

Fingers crossed ???????????????????

All the best

John

Ooooh you fair-weathered lot!  ;D  :-*  The I.C.R is going to be there come what may. In fact the van's all loaded right now with the mystery road run loan vehicle which is small, red, plasticky, Perspexy & only a single-seat version. It'll be there on the Slow Run start line come 11am tommorow. Then you can all see what it is......   :o

Oooh, now if we give much more detail away, the Peel Mafia's bound to spot it before tomorow. Then they woun't have the joy of seeing the body lift up when the motor is shown off.....

Oh all right, my arm's been twisted, here's the last & final clue.  Tony Marshall was quite involved with these for a short period in the mid '70s......   ;)   ;D

Just returned from WATERWORLD oh I mean the National rally. The site was left as a complete mud bath! My hat is off to the Bug club for soldiering on through awfully conditions to make a success of the rally!! Great runs out despite the rain and we saw a few treats as well, a great Berkeley B105, two lovely little Subaru's, Stuarts mystery car turned out to be some battery powered shopping trolly as expected. The funniest thing we saw today as the show ended was a spectacular run by Mike shepherd, amidst all the camper vans being pulled off the waterlogged field by a tractor Mike in his Goggo coupe decided to just go for it, he starter off at the dry end of the field and just charged at speed for the muudy end and to our suprise power glided over the lot and staight out of the gate! , I wish I had it on film!

Hi

Congratulations to all who braved the rains to attend the rally.

Weather in Bournemouth was crazy, with torrential rain one minute and the sun coming out for about 20 mins. evry hour.

I actualy went out in the Heinkel and did about 25 miles in the afternoon. On the way home it was a bit scary as the rain was so heavy I had a job seeing where I was going when getting into the right hand lane on a dual cariageway and turning right at a roundabout.

I have decided to sell the Heinkel as I havn't got a garage for the winter.

I must admit it has been the car that has got the most attention of all of the many classics I have owned.

Since buying it though I have realy missed the hunt for a car, it's so much fun looking for the next micro.

If anyone has something to sell thats cheaper than the Heinkel and needs only very minor work or is MOT'd then let me know.

Whatever happens I will be at more rallys with something soon, IF THE WEATHER IMPROVES A BIT .

PS what was Stuarts car then ????

John

For all those quivering with excitement to find out just what it was I took on the Slow-Run of NMCR '08, it was in fact (fanfare) a 1991 Batricar Aire 3 mobility scooter!  :o  Oh yes folks, this small, red, rather plasticky, rather Persex-laden vehicle (I never actully said it was a Peel! I had on loan!) was the I.C.R's transport of choisce to reach the giddy heights of 8mph through the lanes of Wiltshire on the way to Calne Locks to watch the K & A canal being filled up by all that falling out of the sky....

So why a Batricar? Well, as most of you all know by now, all the MoT testers round my way are refusing point-blank to even concider testing the Mini-Comtesse, then shortly afterwards our very own Cuscus47 of this forum (Ian Hellings) had bought the aforementioned Batricar on eBay & asked me if I would store it for him prior to it being shipped out to the States. With it then safely tucked away in one of my sheds I suddenly pondered the facts that mobility scooters are exempt from Tax, MoT & insurance, so why not use it as a means of sticking two fingers up at the buerocrates that insist on such things, thus waylaying the Comtesse, & doing the Slow-Run after all.  Approval was granted by Ian & the Run was done. Admittidly I didn't do the entire 20-mile course, but that was soely due to the fact that the batteries are rather past their prime & thus would never have lasted the whole distance anyway.

On to the rally itself and no doubt it will be remembered as the year the rain ALMOST won. By early Saturday morning the camping field & show fieald were both well & truely waterlogged & totally unpassable, but not to be beaten, the rally was just moved onto the hardstanding around the muesum buildings themselves with the public cars, vans trailers etc. parked on the outside road, easly streching for a quarter mile in both directions at one point on Sunday afternoon. I'll let the photos do most of the talking, but in my opnion, National '08 was still a roaring succses & a damn good, enjoyable rally regardless of the weather.  So stuff the moaners!

Hi Stuart.

great pictures.

Just think I was going to come and sleep in the tent again :o

A nice few henkel/Trojans.

Nice to see my old Acoma Super comtesse, I wonder where the Break is now?

What is the orange electric beastie then?

If you spot my Heinkel for sale on Ebay there is a picture of you.

Not sure if this means the buyer gets you free as well or if I have to pay you royalties for using your famous bonce as and extra advertising gimic ? ;D

Hi John. The rally wasnt as bad as it sounds, admittedly friday it rain almost all day but all saturday was dry until about 3.30 when the heavens opened as we returned from the run. All sunday was dry with the exception of a light brief shower at lunchtime,it was only the fact that the site was so waterlogged before hand that made such a mess. You could have come and camped around the edge like blob did and had a great weekend. Still, hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Rain, what rain? seemed fine to me. John, I think the perfect car for you would have to be a Goggomobil, having accompanied Mike in his on Saturday, it feels more like a small car than a microcar and they have range,  Mike drove all the way from London and back.

Hi.

The orange thing is a Teilhol Citadine and is for sale at around £1000.  Steve Vine is the man to ring, down
near Southampton.  I helped him to import it a couple of years ago and we took in the Arras autojumble
on the same day.  Quite an adventure, the seller has loads of interesting stuff in her barn including a lovely
turquoise Messerschmitt and my personal favourite, a tandem seater Poirier.  Sadly it wasn't for sale otherwise
I'd have beeen back the next day!

Thanks all for the name of the orange thingy.

It's handy because it's in Southampton (only 35 miles away), but I will be looking for something able to drive a bit more distance.

Hi John. Sorry to see you are selling your Heinkel. If lack of a garage is really the reason for selling then surely when you buy the next one you will have the same problem. I had that same problem, two cars and no garage so earlier this year I found a classic car storege facility that is basicly a big modern barn with lots of security, I share it with mostly American car owners, if you could find something localy you could try what I did and say " I need less than half the space, how about half price!" I now store my Schmitt for seven quid a week. Its just a thought especially as you seem to have sorted the Heinkel now. Regards, Bob
