Title: Peels - inf and controversy
Post by: P50 on September 30, 2006, 06:58:11 PM
Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know the EXACT nomenclature of the moped(s?) that the 4.2ps DKW engine was fitted to.  I believe it was a Victoria but that's about it. I know a genuine Peel motor is an 8041600 but other motors can also have 4.2ps with kickstart/3 speed. Maybe a Hummel used the engine? There was a 5speed super motor too..

Also what model/year Vespa used the switch for both Peels?  Or does anyone know the switch serial number? Is it a Ciam switch?

I've just read Rum's piece on Peel replicas.  As far as I'm concerned if the car didn't drive out the Viking works in '64 to '66 it aint a Peel. Of course bits and pieces get replaced over nearly half a century. You can't have an original NOS P50 door or NOS lower half of a Trident, build it up and call it a genuine car. That's fraud in the artworld with severe penalties if punted on.  An original derelict, all but destroyed car found in a hedgerow is a Peel.  A collection of parts is not. It's a kit.

If a brand new Mondeo gets reshelled two weeks old its bonefide because it retains its I.D. And a genuine shell is used.    If an MGB roadster is rebuilt with a new heritage shell it keeps it reg.And is genuine.  If an MGB is built from the ground up with all new parts its a new car.

Warhols are under much scrutiny these days as what's what is so blurry.

With Peels it's simple.

Discuss..

Hi P50,
all the serial numbers you can use for a Peel are:80316..., 80416.... Even the 2 PS engines, 803001...,80303...are useable but slower.
803... means foot gearchange, and 804 means hand gearchange. to use for a P50 or a Trident it depents on the length of the starting axle. Sorry what kind of axle you need for a P50 or a Trident i have forgotten, but i know it is important, coz it depents on the different handstart system of the cars.

I am sure Peelpower (Ferdi) will be able to put you right on the DKW engine, he did a long piece about it in the Peel Newsletter  Summer 1993 RUMCAR NEWS 37

Jean,

Is there any way one can obtain all the previous Peel newsletters? I'm sure there's a plethora of information to be procured. Are they kept on a PC?

I've been hunting for an engine for over a year.  They're rare.  Got a vergaser though!  I'll tear down new motor and use internals to revitalise my lump with a noisy big end..  Lots of DKW engines appear on Ebay but the 4.2 is extinct it seems. My P50 sits in slumber.

Can't you strip the big end and take the bearings to a factor that deals in bearings etc? There are usually numbers on them to help in matching up. How about motorcycle dealers that have workshop facilities? ;D

I could do that if that was the only thing wrong. I'm unsure if the piston is a 4.2 as compression seems low compared to my Trident.

Plus a couple of fins are damaged on the barrel. So it would be easier to source a sound 80416 and make my motor fit.

The search continues..

New Rings? Have you split the engine to have a look?

Oil seals need to be changegd at the crank. This was my problem on my Trident. No way to start the car before !!

Whoever the monkey was who 'fixed' my engine was a yobbo.
Put the internal quadrant for the pullstart in the wrong place so made a new pull handle instead of opening case again. Screws and bits missing. I could go on.. Just a shocking effort.  I've had the seals changed. I have low compression. That's why it didn't start and had to be pushed. Box and clutch were ok.

I suppose I could 'repair' mine but it would cost loads more than a good s/h unit. Parts are very hard to get.

I'll just have to wait untill a lump appears in the fatherland.

Oddly enough JMG has 80416004170 and my Tri has 4172.   We all know Peel bought 200 odd engines.  Just a bit funny that they're so close numbers.  They were built 2 years(ish) apart. They were obviously just left in the store room and used as and when.

I'm just happy both my Peels have original chassis plates, number plates,I.D and original engines. Two matching number cars. The Trident even has its supplying dealer badge on rear plate.

Oh and that they're Manx ceded! ;)
