Title: AC Invacars?
Post by: adi on November 07, 2010, 09:52:28 PM
I came across one of these things on my travels up north somewhere. Its sitting behind a barn and looked in reasonably poor ish state, but savable.

Its not the type with a twin-cylinder engine in the back. I can say that for sure because I looked in the boot and it just had an empty boot with a battery. I assume the engine is in the front, but I could not get the bonnet open.

It's front end kind of looked similar to a Bond, with a really long scuttle panel.

I believe this is the earlier Villiers powered Invacar?

The owner would part with it for suitable money it seems, but it would be a bit of a mission to rescue it, since Mother Nature started assimilating it as usual, and it's pretty far away from where I live. But, it's doable.

So, can anybody tell me anything about them? This one is abit older then the 'normal' invacar with a twin cylinder engine, right?

I remember hearing somewhere that the Invacar club managed to convince the DVLA to let these be registered officially. Or is this not so?

Are the type that I spotted at all desirable? Is it worth the effort/transport to get it?

I basically know next to nothing about them.

You want Stuart Cyphus   invacar@yahoo.co.uk  he runs a dedicated publication and register for these. I should contact him direct.

If it is an invalid carriage, all the power units, villers single, electric motor or twin will be in the rear.
So if its not there, its either a bond or has its engine missing.
regardless of type its worth saving, piccies are probably the best way of identifying it tho ;D

Sounds like it's one of these to me to me Adi, a 1957-1967 metal-bodied AC Acedes...

The engine is in the back, & should be a Villiers Mk 9E/11E depending on age, but this is probibly living in somebody's Scootacar by now.  ;)  As regards getting one back on the road, yes you can, no problem no matter what anyone else tells you these days. Oh, and to the uninitiated reading this, no you don't have to mess around with it's V5, reg number or anything in order to so do either.  Get onto the Invalid Carriage Register (me) for more details when the time comes.

Is it worth saving? of course it is!!!!  :)  If need be, give me a shout....

Or is it electric without the locomotive batteries in place. Long nose sounds like Dick Tippen, the famous highway thang. His brother is Big Dick better known to you as the Rev Flasher. Ooo, orange beacons in the belfrey! Anyway the dodgier it is the more it needs rescue I suspect. Would not mind an Acedes, oh eck I am collecting again.

We can tell what you were watching yesterday!  ;)     It could well be an electric Acedes. There were quite a few made but I only know of two around these days, one in Germany & one in Lincolnshire on a sort of farmstead or something. Where were you orbiting Adi when you found it?

If it is an invalid carriage, all the power units will be in the rear.

Not so all of 'em, even into the full-bodied era....   ;)
