Fri 06-07-2012 to Sun 08-07-2012 Bath Microcar Rally - 27th event
Gates open from: 12.00 on the Friday
Venue: Keynsham Rugby Football Club
Venue Address: Crown Fields, Bristol Road , Keynsham , BS31 2BE
Website - www.bristolmicroclub.com Always a good do with great camping facilities. Clubhouse on site and cafe 1/2 mile away for breakfast. Rally opens 12 noon on Friday 6th. Road run on Saturday and main show day on Sunday. Autojumble and club stands. Camping cost is £15 plus £5 rally entry. Everyone welcomed. The Bristol Microcar Club needs as much support as possible so please support this rally. Last year's rally was very well organised by Wynford Jones and supposed to be the last one due to lack of funds. Thankfully due to a good attendance and various generous donations the 2012 show can take place. Over the years we've all had a cracking time at this show (Victoria Park, Dryham Park, Stothert and Pitt and now Keynsham Rugby Club) and I feel we need to get this rally back on the map on a more permanent basis. Come on, don't be shy - give it a go - who knows you may enjoy it again !

Horace Cyril Batchelor (22 January 1898 – 8 January 1977) was notable in the United Kingdom during the late 1950s and early 1960s as an advertiser on Radio Luxembourg. He advertised a way to win money by predicting the results of football matches, sponsoring programmes on Radio Luxembourg. His spelling out of Keynsham, a town in western England where he operated, made it famous. (Spelt K . E . Y. N. S . H . A . M )

Well quite! A bit like the Coast to coast moped run I did two weekends ago, a months rainfall in one night! Didn't dampen our spirits though, a fantastic event!! No cabbage fields, just breath taking scenery! How about a coast to coast micocar run?

If that was the run across north England then once Tinnions is up and habitable, which might be as early as next year but more likely the year after, then along with AP there can be the offer of additional activity and space to enhance the trip north to participate and yet knock back on costs a bit. This would be at the Cumbrian end.
Down here a coast to coast is going to be about 70 miles to get to the start as I am nearly as far as you can get from the sea. On the other hand it means I am nearer more places.
I was rather eyeing up the round Britain run actually. Maybe the two could be joined together with a shorter stint for those coast to coasting. That would probably mean Weston Super Mud to Lowerstoft or something though. Not the most attractive set of roads and a fair old step.

Yes, it was Hartlepool to Whitehaven. It was a two day event, first day ended at Alston which is about half way and featured a wonderful stretch of Pennine descent. Day two was Alston to Whitehaven via Penrith and Cockermouth where my front brake clevis pin broke and I had to do a twenty mile stretch with rear brake only! There were stop points at about 20 mile intervals. I did the run with a couple of chums, one of which conked out after just four miles, a gudgeon pin clip had come out and mangled his piston, the other guy did the run without incident on a Velosolex with the aid of much pedaling, a hero in my book!!

Weather for most of the weekend was crap, despite which there was a good turn out on Sunday morning in the car park.

Shame there weren't any Bonds or Scootacars this year but given the weather it was nice to find anything there at all and it was good chatting in the carpark. Thanks to anyone who took part or worked on the organisation.

I might be out of order here, but I really like the four wheel Bond Bug. I have always liked Bugs apart from the single front wheel layout which always looks very wrong to me, and having two fronts will no doubt improve its handling dramatically without much loss of performance. Once when we were leaving Chippenham Festival where I had been driving around town on my Drum Car with the Fezheads I spotted one of those red TG 500s coming the other way, not sure which. The only other time I saw one on the road was a canary yellow one at Hammersmith Broadway in about 1985. It overtook me and my band mates (in my old Ford Escort) and weaved through the heavy traffic on the big roundabout without slowing, zipping from lane to lane so rapidly that it was not getting in anyone's way. My band mates could not believe what they were seeing, so I was able to give them a history lesson!

I might be out of order here, but I really like the four wheel Bond Bug.
Have to say this was a fantastic piece of work, lots of little detail changes that made the car lsit and ook just right unlike every other four-wheel Bug conversion I've seen.

looks a good gathering i prefer it when theyre all squashed together - more intimate n never been keen on regimented lines of one make . i too love the 4 wheel Bug - its a long while since i saw one and looks different - is it the round headlights - NICE :)

Yup, the "bug eye" headlamps are a nice touch, also make it look a bit like a Lotus/Caterham/Westfield Seven.

Amazing what a couple of old Isetta headlights can do, bolted on as an apparent afterthought, stylistically. Clearly I am odd one out here as I prefer integral design where the headlight would actually not protrude at all.
Isetta v Heinkel, British Schmitt v Continental Schmitt, Bug eyed USA Berk v British Berk, Frog eye Sprite v Lenham bonneted Sprite
Ho hum.

External bolt-on lights sometimes look awful, sometimes great, I much prefer the faired-in Heinkel-Trojan lights to the Isetta ones, and many other examples too, but to me they look great on the Bond. All down to personal taste!
