Title: RUMCAR NEWS 113
Post by: Jean on June 13, 2012, 05:05:45 PM
RUMCAR NEWS 113 was in the post this morning.  Another cracking edition from Chris, four pages thinner than we would have wished but the sudden rise in postal charges particularly for our overseas friends has meant we have to keep the weight down to under 100grms.  Sorry about that.
Have you subscribed or  renewed your subscription yet?  Don't miss out on a very good read.  Have you noticed if you pay by PayPal there is another cheaper option now, if you would like to receive  electronic copies  for the year it will only cost you £10.   Jean

It seems that Royal Mail is living up to it's reputation of being both expensive and slow.

Lets hope you get yours on Saturday morning. Then you can read it in bed while it is raining outside.

The wait will be well worth it.

I am now planning the next edition and would like some input from you. Yes you! I know the thought of putting pen to paper is quite daunting. But fear not. You have the knowledge on your pet subject, and that is all that is important. I can help you turn that knowledge into something of interest to all our readers. Once you have done it once the second one is much easier.

If you have a pet subject you would like to put forward please give me a call on 01883 724774.

Got mine. Not bad in 2 days when Royal Mail quotes 3 days for second class.  ;D

Here is a question for you alll

can anybody identify where the picture on the front cover was taken back in 1913?

To me it looks like Wiltshire, but it may be somewhere else.

I have been asked the question and I have no idea. So can anybody help?

Reply by Chris...

Dear Bob

Glad to hear that your latest RCN has arrived. I have been trying to find people who are willing to write about the technical spects of Microcars, such as Engines, but they are few and far between. I am still looking and hopefully can satisfy some of your needs.

It may not be obvious to you and other readers, but I am trying to increase the number of pages written by people other than yours truly, and so far it has reached 20 pages where as the previous edition was 16.5 pages. As I have always said, you guys are the experts.

I have now had opportunity to fully devour 113. Its a good read Chris, well done, I actually prefer it with this amount of pages. The article on HO engines got me thinking, I have seen a few Rovins over the years but have never been able to take a peek under the lid, for some reason I assumed that they had HO engines but according to the article the company tried but failed to produce one, thats new to me. I take it they have a side by side upright potted affair then? They are watercooled I believe?

Thanks Jonathan, I still cant quite make out the engine lay out from that picture but at least it does reveal that its water cooled.

With the plug caps that far apart it must be horizontally opposed?

Just read this on Wikipedia

Rovin Type D2
Rovin D2 (1949)It is not clear whether the D1 was ever sold in significant numbers, but production of the Rovin D2 started in 1947 at the company's newly acquired plant at Saint-Denis. The car still qualified (just) for the 2CV fiscal horse power category, but the engine was now a flat twin 423 cc four stroke water cooled unit.

It certianly looks like a flat twin. Maybe I have misunderstood what Chris is saying in his article.
Come on Chris where are you when we need you?

Dear Bob

I have always said that Rovin produced a hoizontal engine, as I have seen one with my own eyes in France 2009. What I have said in my article is that both Clua and Rovin in France did build their own HO engines and to do this they they had to develop their own design,  but the design was not a success.

Having re read my text I can see that I have precied it down too much and it does give the impression that the engines were only experimental, when in reality they did go into production, but where never used in any other makes or sizes. I have no idea of the numbers of either of these engines, but I am sure somebody will have this or a good estimate.

I suppose you want a written correction in the next issue of RCN? Thats what comes of proof reading your own text.

Dear Bob

After some research it appears there were approx 2700  Rovin HO engines in two sizes 425 cc  (1500) and 462 cc (1200). Basically the same engine but with a slightly different bore. The engines were indeed side valve and water cooled. and like the rest of the car well designed and constructed.

No big point being made here Chris but re-reading the text it definitely gives the impression that the De Rovin brothers gave up in an attempt to produce there own flat twin. If you had to chop the text down at some point I can see how this happened. I thoroughly enjoyed the article though and am still trying to get my head around how that two pistons in one cylinder two stroke engine works! Amazing! I wouldn't say a correction was warranted but maybe a clarification at some point as in the future RCN will be looked upon as an accurate reference work and eliminating any ambiguity would only be to your credit. Its up to you as you are the editor. Keep up the good work Chris, it is a great issue.

Certainly soft, not like Flint.

Are you thinking of Shaftsbury and Hovis amongst others? Could be that bakers basket. Clearly there are Baptists about but not many good clues. Still I cannot comment as I do not receive a copy until I get myself sorted out. Nice presentation quality though, well done.

The third photo shows a seriously clever and simple design of folding side window that could be copied on a modern microcar.  OK, you have to stop and open the door to open the window, but it does give the option of fully open or fully closed.  And no frame, mechanism, etc.
