Can anybody explain what the knuckle dusters do on this bike?
I can see that they are connected to a bowden cable and presumably control something, but what?

i thought you had started an area ( see beginning of this post ) for moped brigade , if so why on earth are all these moped threads coming up on RUM which has nothing to do with Mopeds . scooters i can get as there are many connections between cabin scooters and scooters - engines , manufacturers etc. mopeds very little connection at all

This is the moped enthusiasts area. I just started a thread in the Off Topic Lounge. Don't tell me that the Off Topic Lounge is now only for Microcars?
I have five Sans Permis microcars all with 50cc moped engines. The local cyclemotor club were fantastic in sourcing some new rings for my Flipper which now runs well - Sachs two speed automatic engine.
Many microcar owners are also enthusiastic moped riders so I think there is a link. More so than the mobility scooters which are tenuously connected to Invalid carriages - obviousness very little to do with microcars (Especially the AC Acedes ones).
But there again, what about Shaun's recent posting about the Villiers engined mobility scooter - possible links there.
Its quite a grey area and I suppose we are all interested in many different vehicles (even planes and especially microcars that look like planes). The main thing we are all interested in is microcars.
Some preferring to keep the forum completely devoid of anything except microcars - Unusual or do Isettas and Messerschmitts qualify?
I will resist commenting on anything other than Microcars before I am burned at the stake.

I think it is a good idea to air these things in the off topic forum I have Ferguson tractors as well as a bond and isetta my wife hates micros but loves tractors and steamers and mopeds have a fair bit in common with micros

Thats the general Idea, its for any subject you like but most topics generaly have some vague connection, old, has an engine, you get the idea. As Barry pointed out earlier, this lounge can keep things ticking over whilst there are luls in the microcar chat. Its not rocket science, now there's an idea for a thread!

okay but one other thing whilst we are sorting it out . we must be much more reluctant to bushwhack a subject . we all do it . if a subject is e.g. 9E carburretors next minute it 's on motorcycles for the rest of the thread and it's all jumbled . we should be more likely to open another topic than take one over with our " hobbyhorse " like others i will often open a thread purely cos it's so quiet with nothing happening .if more micro stuff was posted then less other stuff would be i think.

Myself and three chums , all fellow microcar folk as well did the Mince pie moped run yesterday starting at the Orwell Yacht club Ipswich. A great run and fine weather, pleased to report that my 49 Guzzi Motoleggera went fine as did the chums bikes. Here is a link to the official pics. You can see my machine about half way down. Talking of mopeds, I haven't posted my new ones!
One of them is horrible (well they both are ;D ), but they were both free (and in my village!)
The worst one is for parts, no point getting it running.
Second one, I think I was really lucky to get. It's like NEW, and it runs very well! Still a bit "choky" because I'm running it on old fuel (might as well use the 1/2 tank it came with!). The only thing that lets it down is the stickers on the engine covers, and also the chrome on the handlebars is slightly pickled. It also came with a proper windscreen, but I didn;t fit it, it looks horrible with it :D
It starts REALLY easily (video in a few minutes)
This afternoon I'm gonna try another "moped hunt" in the village, I already know of a few other mopeds in the village ;)

Yeh, the reason why all the silencers look familiar on lightweight Italian bikes is that all the makers bought then in from a specialist maker called Silentium. Same applies to petrol tanks, tool boxes etc etc. Thankfully most used there own engines which is what gives the bikes there character. Keep collecting the peds!

Hehe well hopefully soon I'll move on to more sports mopeds, I like the idea of fast italian ones, but personnally I prefer the look of the BB3 peugeot!
I just don't like the "turtleshell" tanks most malagutis have, or even the square tanks.

THe 3 black and white photos at the bottom are of a Monet Goyon. That really is the "top" for me!

However, the Peugeot BB3 I have isn't very fast... It accelerates well, but earlier I had a go with my dad (we were on the Peugeot BB3 T and the new Motobecane 50V). I'd say theyre just as fast! Thats why I want to tune the peugeot a bit, by stuffing a bigger carb on and modifying a SPARE cylinder,piston and head! The current carb is a 14mm, but apparently 19,mm Dell Orto carbs work quite well on them!
Well, I'll start by advertising my AU88L (not AV, my one is a Motoconfort), which I'll stuff at a very high price (500€), see if there is ANY intertest, if not obviously bring the price down, but I;m in no rush to sell it, and apparently its worth 400! (so try more ;D )

I cant say I like very many French motorcycles, the Liberia is quite nice but mainly because it has an Ydral engine! I do like french scooters though.

I love most french sports mopeds, and also old french bikes (little 125s are nice, but the 500 JAP motor New Map isn't bad either!)

Yeh, that is quite nice, I guess my tastes are stuck in the 1950's. Looking at the one with the blue tank, you wouldnt want to put your foot near that totaly exposed primery chain, it would cut it straight off! Where's the Health ansd safety officer? The one that a lot of old Frenchmen rave about is the Gnome Rhone.

PS: The picture of the owner sitting on it, without the headlamp fairing was when it was BRAND NEW, in front of the peugeot dealer the day he got it!

I will try and look out for an original, but apparentky they;'re very rare and count over 50€ for an original... New fibreglass ones are 20€, but I don't want fibreglass on something so original!
The moped does come with the old helmet and one panier, not the same as in the old picture, it's one of the "slanted" ones. Shame it's not a pair. Doesnt matter, I have a pair for it! (I bought them before even buying a sports moped, they were 1€ each and I thought they'd be perfect on a white BB3 SP!)

Well, 3 more free in my village (2km away actually)
One of them is actualy a 100cc, so technically not a moped, not the best condition though...
Theres a Peugeot Bima (the 1st picture), Malaguti 4 speed (sports moped, and its free!), and the Peugeot 100cc! Bet Bob thinks I've got better taste, getting a Malaguti ;) I still prefer the Peugeot, this one doesnt look the best, but its free and should be fast ;) I may stuff a sports chrome handle bar on it, would look better :)
I think the Bima will come up lovely with an oily rag. Engine is probably seized, seems like it hasnt moved for ages (it even has a dried up dead bird on the seat!)
Try to pick them up wednesday :)

not being funny but a long long time since you posted anything RUM on this forum jonathon , are we losing you ? where are all the Nobel updates ? it's only really you and " don't go off RUM" bob that are interested in mopeds ;)
i always like to see any interesting finds - but where are the Inters , Reyonnahs , Mochet's etc.

I know, I'm more into mopeds now, probably because I'm sort of legally allowed to.
Havent been very microcar active recently, Nobel and Schmitt will probably be restored when I'm older.
Microcar finds arent as easy to discover a smopeds unfortunately, otherwise I would have piled them on top of each other ;D
No more nobel updates as car still hasnt progressed, and no more informationn discovered, as I seem to have found all of the info about it ;)
Also need to build up more money to buy a schmitt dome, currenlty I have enough to restore the blue sports moped, but after tht have to start saving up again!

Got them home now, started working on the Peugeot Bima...
Engine is seized, so its currently resting in the vice with a load of WD 40 though the bore, exhaust port and manifold.
The engines of the other 2 bikes are seized. Luckily the Malaguti had only a "light seize" and I was able to free it off by chucking it into gear and "rocking" it until it turned (took about a minute). Peugeot 100 bike looks a lot nicer than I thought, I think I will be able to get it going, but not yet anyway (oh, and it has a Villiers engine, and I think I remember seeing a clutch cover like mine in my dads parts, maybe he has more engine parts if I need them)

Cleaned it with an oily rag, best thing for it. I found some yellowish oil (old moped gearbox oil!), which I thought would be perfect. It did come out quite well!

This one was delivered this morning (also free!)
Tried to get it going. When I got it, the engine was not seized, but it was a bit tight. Quick spray of WD40 to lubricate it, and it was a bit better. I think the bearings are bad or dry, since if I don't turn the motor for an hour it's sort of tight again, but once its free it turns perfectly. I'm sure once the engine is running it will fix itself.
Nice big spark. Not easy to see if there is a spark, because you have to pedal to engage the motor (you have to physically go forward, because engine drives off front wheel obviously!), at first I couldn;t see anything, because I was testing it in the sun. Easiest way was risk pedalling and putting my finger on the electrode. YES it works! It wasn't as bad as I expected, didn;t hurt as I thought it would (there again it's only 6v!).
I just have a fuel problem. The fuel was not going through, I found out that the fuel pump was not working, I think it is now (some stupid design, also acts as a reed valve). It works like a heart really, has a diaphragm that, with crankcase pressure/suction controls the diaphragm, and acting as a heart beat with the fuel, sucking it in the pump and umping it in the carb in the next beat, so there is no float chamber in the carb.
Got it coughing with a bit of spray in the bore, but I don't think it will need much to get it properly running.
No pictures yet, but I started oily ragging this one too, and its coming out lovely and black, not much ruse luckily!

Here is the Solex semi cleaned up. Got it running! Still not perfect, it starts easy when cold, but after a while the engine tries to conk out when you deaccelerate, and its a buggar to start again. I think the decompressor will need a bit of work aswell, whenever I hold the deompressor and pedal to try and start it (when warm, start not too hard when cold, and no its not an electrical problem!), and it starts "popping" even with the deompressor on. I don't think its decompressing enough... I did clean the cylinder head when I got it (see pics), and the deompressor doesnt leak when "off", but I just don't think its going "in" enough when pulled on!
Bloody solex ;) The fuel pump design was not needed originally, they could have mounted the carb lower down, or even have an upsidedown engine like this one!

He would have to be an Invacar not to get that one bob - very good. Perhaps made in Europe for the Australian market.

Another couple in my possession!
The frame will end up being a bitza. I've been wanting to make my own "mod" for a while, and this chassis is great for that.
The other one is a "Griffon". It's very rare! Built under license from Peugeot, it's essentially the same as my other BB VT, wiht a different "badge". It's also earlier so has period differences.
