The Lancaster flew over our back garden over the weekend. The local historic railway at Wetheringsett had a 1940's event which included a fly-by. Lovely sound.

As a drummer I know only too well that camera mics are designed to record the human voice which goes from about 150 Hz to 5,000 Hz. Merlins, like drums and cymbals, go down to FAR deeper bass frequencies and FAR higher treble frequencies. Then you need good speakers or headphones to play back the recording. TV and computer speakers are barely better than those in 1960s mini portable transistor radios!

ok Marcus you obviously know your stuff but why would the BBC send the wrong equipment for a once in 50 year soundtrack ?

Because the right equipment is not easily portable and is currently in the Royal Albert Hall recording the Proms! Broadcast mics can pick up a wide range from sub-sonic to ultra-sonic, and some can pass a signal down 300 meters of cable with no degradation! But it is not just the mic, it is how much digital info the camera can record, and then it has to be massively compressed to get onto UK's snail-speed internet!
Seriously, some decent mics are quite pricey...about 20 years ago I saw a decent Ribbon Mic in Studio Spares or Funky Junk. It was only £19,000 because it was used!

Don't I know it! With my level of profound deafness I haven't heard a TV programme, at a comfortable volume for the rest of the family, with any real degree of clarity in ten years. Our old TV, a proper deep-backed thing, was ok, but this modern flat-screen thing I find myself just looking at the pretty pictures most of the time if the programme doesn't carry subtitles.
Some have suggested the lack of clarity of the sound to my ear could partly be the projection depth of a flat speaker in said flat-screen TV over a proper conical speaker found in older TV's?
As I once said to one of my teachers during a science lesson on acoustics; "Hear a pin drop at ten paces? I can't even hear an anvil falling right behind me!"

Hi Stuart - Have you tried a soundbar? My mum has problems with her hearing and was also struggling since she got a flat screen. Its made a big difference to her.

Apparently the news these two were flying out of Waddington with Spitfire escort, followed by the Vulcan, saw the local roads getting blocked up with sight sears. Rather like when we were told that Steam on the mainline was not of great enough interest to be bothered with, the facts prove otherwise. These things are working social history and it needs a clever way of funding them to keep them working. For older folk the propeller planes mean a lot, but to the younger, who have never experienced a Vulcan, the pretty raw power contained in the grace of the airframe stunned. It lives up to its name. Not having a working Concord is a travesty. Where ever it went at airshows in generally stole the show. An Empires last throw of the dice, perhaps. I glad my Dad had a hand in it.
