The Belcar and it was built in the Netherlands ( I think ) ???   (thank you Jan De Lange!)

I wish I could read Dutch.

The Belcar is the correct answer but not the complete answer, this is where it gets complicated.Egon Brutches original design, the Spatz 200 was a three wheeler but only prototypes were made so in the first instance Germany was where they were made. The Belcar which came along later was made in Switzerland, and then it can be argued that the avolette in also based on this design and is a three wheeler made in France. I couldnt find any reference to the Netherlands but this does not mean that you are wrong, I would be interested to know if its true. Jim, your prize is five year subsription for Rumcar news for every member of the Vintage microcar and minicar club of the USA, the only condition being that all members must be in attendence for our National rally 2008 and be accompanied by both of their grandparents. Simple.

This is why I wish I could read Dutch.

Jan De Lange's write up of the Belcar did seem to mention Switzerland, but since I can't read Dutch to save my life, I could not tell if it was designed there or built there or if "Switzerland" was the word I was looking at.
Also- there appeared to be an inordinate amount of time spent talking about the "netherlands version" of the car (well, that is how I read it...).

I can appreciate your problem, Dutch isnt the easiest of languages to busk your way through! All my books say built in Switzerland, sold in Holland. That was fun Jim. Ask us another and lets stick with the good looking proper microcars like the last one!

A couple of Belcar links (neither in english I'm afraid) but a beautiful example sadly destroyed in 1966 after it was vandalized. Neither site mentions any Dutch connection.

Thanks for those links Rusty chrome, what a cracking looking microcar, this is why Egon is so reveared. I was beginning to feel that this forum was doomed to discuss only the ugly ones. By the way I love your ID, do you have a relative called 'corroded ali' by chance?

There is a Belcar in the 2nd "Sparrow" bubblecar book, in Switzerland.

I certainly like the style of the Belcar better than the later 4wheel variants.

Marcus, I was suprised the bellcar got in the sparrow book because at the time David was doing the photography he was insisting that the cars all be presitine and then when the book was released it showed the worlds most scruffy Belcar, I guess its rarity compensates. David Sparrow is quite a character, The Nobel featured in that book was mine at the time and he asked me to take him to an interesrting building to shoot the car in front of. I suggested the Local Civic Centre because I like art deco, when we got there he just marched straight in and shouted which young lady wants to be photographed in my new book? I died of embaressment! It worked though, a volunteer was found and it is the girl you now see standing by the Nobel and holding the door open. She got a free copy for her trouble.

Lets have more scruffy stuff in books says I !!! "Facinating" as Star Trek's Mr Spock would say. I've also got both the Colour Family Albums on my shelf as well, bought in the days before I even knew what half these cars actully were. I'm still paciantly awaiting Volume three....
Title: Re: Mystery Microcar November 2007
Post by: Bob Purton on November 30, 2007, 10:30:23 PM
I'm not against the scruffy stuff, its just that it flew in the face of his original criterier! Is it worth me buying the first Sparrow album Stuart, what is featured in it? Oh I just remember something else that happen the day of the photo shoot. David spotted a traveling fair ground/circus in a field next to the civic centre and suggested that we go and get some shots of Nobby(my pet name for the Noble) alongside the dodgems, we asked for permission and were promply told to ####off! This illustrates the tenacity of the man, he insisted that we went back later and ask someone else, I was right behind him! As you can see, it paid off hence the dodgem photos in the book.

I take it that you received a free copy with your car in! Also why was it parked on a yellow crossed square? You get  done for that around here.

Yes Bob , I got a free copy signed by the author. We got permission to shoot anywhere on the grounds hence dodged a parking ticket.

I have only ever seen one Nobel on the road, and that was in the late 70s in Kent. I think I was on my way from Maidstone to Folkestone or Hastings when a Blue and white one truned right ahead of me. Although I had heard of Nobels from a newspaper article I did not know what they looked like and it was years later that I found out what I had seen.

I have always like the shape of the Noble. The smooth lines and the colour scheme, what comes to mind is a half sucked mint imperial!

Seriously John, why not go for something like this, the value can only go one way and thats up . I know you have a fascination with sans permis vehicles and some are quite cute but why not go for something that you can drive without fear of being overtaken by a pedestrian this time? Join the microcar drivers , I still maintain that this is where the real fun starts.

Hi Bob

Yes I have decided to look for a car that is in good condition and that will be able to drive at least shortish distances in a reasonable comfort and time., that way i will be able to drive it to local shows and trailer it to ones that are further away, and to the farm etc.

The problem is that finding a reasonably desireable car thats in fair condition and not a stupid price isn't easy as everyone is after the same thing.

I will still be loooking out for Acomas, because I just think they need as many friends as they can get, a 1st class condition Break or Berline sport would be worth having as they are practical and usable, also if you get the later unrestricted engine type they are a lot more useable on the road.

I like Bambis and Cursors for later U.K. micros.

Your Inter and a Rayonnah would do it for Quirky styling though.

I will just have to see what turns up at a reasonable price ( one of everything in the sweet shop would do though)

Did you ever manage to do anything with your Willam?

John

Hi John
why don't you try a goggomobil, they are fairy cheap to buy ( in relation to messerschmitt, isetta, and heinkel/trojan) and spares are available in germany. If you could get an Inter they are twice the price of Messerschmitt, and I only know of three reydonna and Bruce weiner has two of them!
Goggo's  saloon prices start at £500 for a rough one up to £2,000 - £4000 for one on the road (in Germany) lhd of course, Coupes are more expensive

Hi

Thanks for the advice and offers of help everyone, I think a Gogo is quite a good idea as well, there is one localy that I have been trying to buy on and off for a couple of years, so I may go and push a bit harder on that one.

I am glad you got the Willam going, it certainly looked like it needed a bit of work, but at least with the older metal cars ther is something solid to work back to when you make up the patches,

Anybody with a surplus car going, let me know.

Hi John
Is the one you are looking at complete and running - preferably with an mot - I'v always bought my collection of Goggo's running or at the very least complete. There are a lot of cars out there which need major work doing on them - I live in London and have a lot of experience of these cars, rebuilt 2 of them and at the momont rebilding my dart which has cost me to date almost £6000 that's  getting all of the parts I need before the rebuild starts. If you like I could look at your car ( if its not complete and running) and advise you what it would cost.
I had a gent ring me up las week and he said he needed a new body for his car because his was rusty - I gave him Uwe address in Germany and said that he could get parts but not a complete body!!! - I just wondered whethes you had looked at his car.
There are cars available in Germany with a TUV (MOT) but be prepared to pay for them - My goggo coupe shown at the last open day is one of those - and it cost me with the transport about £4,500. I hired a van for the weekend to get it home - it was on the outskirts of Hamburg.
Just to give you an idea of the care available

Hi

The Goggos do sound quite good, as at least you can get some parts from Germany, new or S/H.

I love the Dart, is yours going to have any wet weather gear?

I've got an original dart - this car looks like a copy to me produced by Andy Carter - it has the wrong engine, seats , back lights, wrong moulding round the side - Mine will be as original as possible, bearing in mind that there are only 70 left in the world.
