Electronic ignition
« on: April 03, 2008, 01:26:03 PM »
Hi everyone.

I have a friend in France who owns a Berkeley T60 with the Excelsior engine.  He's asked me to find out if the BEC would welcome him as a "non-dom" owner and if I can find a pair of coils for his engine.  Also, he's heard of an electronic ignition conversion kit for his engine and would like to know more.

I've emailed the BEC on his behalf and await their reply.  Can anyone help with a source for the coils or a lead to the electronic kit please?

Regards

Dear Nick

My Neighbour has two Berkleys and may have some spares. He is away for a few weeks so will ask him on his return.

Quite a lot of the schmitt owners are going over to electronics but there are two types, one is fully electronic but the other type still uses the points but without a high current running through them so they dont wear out, only at the heel.

Chris, thanks for that, look forward to any spares leads from your neighbour.

Rob, interesting semi-solution, although I think I'd prefer a fully electronic set-up.
I fitted one to my camper five years ago and have had no trouble with it at all.

Hi Marcus
My camper was a Leyland Sherpa 215 with a Bucanneer elevating roof conversion.  As it had the MGB 1798cc petrol motor there is a wealth of after-market stuff available and the electronics were sourced through my local Mini specialist.  I also slung a Laycock type H overdrive on it, made all the difference to the fuel consumption and cabin noise levels!

Dear Nick

My friend has returned to the UK and has lent me a June 2003 BEC spares list. The club has a vast array of spares including Ignition coils, Contact breakers, Siba Condenser and points backplate for the Excelsior engine.

My friend thinks he may have some old coils, but knows nothing about a replacement electronic ignition system, but the BEC should be able to help him.

If your friend is able to join the owners club, they should be able to solve all his needs.

Thanks for the info, Chris.  The BEC copied me in to their reply to Herve along
roughly the same lines.  They included a link to the guy who did the conversion
and I'm sure that Herve will join up.  If your mate is willing to let a couple of
coils go I'll ask Herve if he's still interested - could you find out how much he'd
want please?

Dear Nick

Thank you for your reply

I have two small SIBA coils sitting on my desk. My friend thinks they work and only wants a good home for them, however I think he deservs a thankyou of some sort.

Ever since I have known him he has had this three cylinder Berkeley, which he says is only one of five that he knows of, in his garage, and has promised me that this summer he will get it going and sell it. This is so that the two Aston Martins can be stored in the dry. I might try and do an article on it as and when it is finished as if it is that rare it could make an interesting article.

Let me know what your friend wants to do.

Hi Chris

I've emailed my man with the good news and will let you know but I'm sure he'll want them.  I'll confirm
and sort out crossing your friend's palm soon.

Seeing your vehicle list I noticed the Hustler 6 again.  Hope we get to see one of Towns' finest creations
at the Open Day!  How's progress on the Envoy?  I was in a traffic queue on the M25 recently (so what's
new?) and the guy in front had a Renault Kangoo with a wheelchair ramp conversion.  I reckon he was bored
because he was making it dance up and down - it reminded me of the Puerto Rican Yank Tanks with their
hydraulic suspension.

Dear Nick

Thank you for acting as the go between regarding these coils.

I have to admit that both the Elswick and the Hustler have been under covers for the last 5 years and I have done nothing to them, and they are unlikly to be at the Openday unless a fairy god mother appears with her magic wand.

My daughters say I have turned into a workaholic, something I totally deny, but it is a fact that I do spend too much time in my office trying to keep on top of running my company and the work load it generates. Therefore I did consider trying to find somebody to do he work on both vehicles but that has come to nothing. I also considered getting the Hustler converted to electic power, just to satisfy my Green aspirations, but as yet am undecided as it would affect the provinence of the vehicle. So perhaps I should just sell them both as they are. Any suggestions?

Let me know when You are passing next and I will be happy to show you them both with a cup of tea thrown in.

Chris Thomas
