The Bleriot Whippet survives!
« on: June 11, 2012, 02:31:58 PM »
For years I have been under the impression that no Bleriot Whippets had survived, I think I'm right in saying that this was the Rumcars impression too.  Just looking at the artist we met on Sundays websire and low and behold
http://martinsquiresautomotiveillustration.blogspot.co.uk/ The furthest away car appears to be a whippet less its body panels. I wonder if we can find out more?

Well spotted that man! The chassis appears to be new, or perhaps just restored and re-painted. Perhaps someone is going to make a new body for it. I love the Grafton beside it, and there are some great French and other cycle cars, cars and bikes there, I love the Citroen Traction Avant and DS Decapotables (Convertible).

Dear Bob and Marcus

I feel sure that after looking at this web site you will enjoy the next edition of RCN, which has a Mike Worthington Williams article on Cycle Cars and another article on Horizontally Opposed engines.

I am sure Mike WW will be able to tell us how many Berliot Whippets there are left in the world.

@Chris...looking forward to that
@JP...Cheers, bigger pic shows the Whippet has no drive chain and steering column propped up by a stick, and Grafton seems to have wooden chassis.

Looks like the engine and bulkhead are held up by a paint tin! You can see why there was a low survival rate of cycle cars  what with chassis being made of lumps of 4x2 and before the days of wood preserver! I can visualize rival companies introducing wood worm to there competitors factory next door! :D

Ford Poplar anyone? Balsom saloon or Lombard roadster?

I forget the make now but there is a basket work car. Think it was German. Saw one doing a Swiss hillclimb event, non competitive of course. Its Swiss so only falling down mountains tied to bits of plywood is allowed as a safe sport! Hupmobil?

if i remember correctly - from one of these books  ;) it was nicknamed the kommisbrot , this being the name of a small brown loaf of the same name . it does indeed look like one

Yup,  kommis=commissary, brot=bread, the car looked like the small rounded loaves from german soldier's Commissary.
And then there were two, a brace of Bleriots

Ah well spotted Jonathan. Reading the ebay owners blurb it would appear there are 5 survivors!  This one not being one of them, the description reveals its a mock up using some period parts, Morris minor bits and bobs but a real Blackburn vee twin motor. Nice project.
