Old Reliant and Rover P5, BBC 4 last night
« on: November 06, 2012, 02:05:53 PM »
An interesting programme about sweets from 8 pm last night, presented by Nigel Sclater. I had not heard of him, but presume he is a successful chef. Lots of traditional sweets in jars discussed, did not see it all but fascinating. This was followed (and partly interrupted by a phone call) by Toast, a film based on Sclater's autobiography about his childhood and odd parents. I thought it would be really dull and was prepared to change channels, but actually it was very good, sometimes funny, sometimes moving.

His Dad had a Rover P5, and both programmes had a good example of this classic, and in Toast there was a brief shot of the gardner unloading a scruffy earlier Reliant. It appeared to be an Estate or a pick-up with hood over the rear space, perhaps like this:

Both programmes are likely to be repeated, and I would happily watch them again.

I have not read the book, but was very impressed with the film. There is a great sweet shop in the High Street in Rye, and another great one in Whitstable.
A shop near me has a few jars of traditional sweets, my faves are Army and Navy (or Cloves)

I saw a trailer for the shows and I am sure they spelled it with the c because I thought "that's unusual". Perhaps my eyes are failing, let's have a quick look....no, they're fine, must be my brain!
