Info needed on Berkeley triple engine and transmission
« on: April 28, 2013, 02:05:59 PM »
Hi all, long time been away but back now at long last.
I am needing some information/papers and or a complete engine/transmission set up
Fr the Berkeley triple engine and gearbox, plus the drive shaft set up

Is the gearbox a separate item from the engine, and how is the final drive to the wheels setup

Does anyone have any pictures of this items in situ..........
If not , any pictures out of the car...........
Any information would be gratefully received
Thank you

Engine is separate from the four speed plus reverse Albion  vr box.
Final drive is by a chain from the gearbox sprocket to final drive sprocket on the diff.

The gearbox will be an Albion VR4 box and failing that a TR4 will fit - the R denotes reverse and the 4 the number of gears!

It's a rectangular cube of aluminium about 9 inches long with a lever at the side and (in theory) some rods that go through to what would be the clutch housing.

MOst Berk boxes look the same but there are 3 speed versions too (TR3).

Good info I will keep aneye out for one too. If V or T what does this letter designate ? And could you clarify the 9inch rectangular cube ? Thanks

I would think that the 9" rectangular cube is the casing of the gearbox,
Hopefully will find one this month at Beaulieu,

Please excuse the naivety of the question, but the possibility is too obvious to go unspoken.
Does this transmission in any way relate to a transmission from either a Triumph car or motorcycle?

Hi
I don't want to put a downer on you finding a Berkeley gearbox at Beaulieu, but we have found less and less microcar items over the years - but you might be lucky - you are welcome to come and chat at our stall ( if we have not got any buyers ) we are positioned in the Green fiels stall no 197 and 196 - next to the end of the big marquee - see you then.

The T & V are the model number and the R relates to the fact that the box has a reverse gear - unlike the Albion T and V models for motorbikes.

The number relates to the number of gears - very early Berks have a TR3 (Model T, with reverse and three speed).

The last Berk triple engine I saw at an autojumble for sale was in Alford in about 1992. I Just missed getting it for £50 - mind you, if it's anything like a talisman twin it'll be a s**t engine to work on and get running correctly.

Would an Albion VR1 VAF  4 speed + reverse gearbox fit?
