2 stroke oil ratios
« on: July 27, 2013, 09:59:22 PM »
Touched on. Before but I now am confused . What determines the ratio used by a particular engine. I have the Lloyd 386c c 2 stroke twin with solex B35 carburetor the ratio in the workshop manual is 25:1 . I have now downloaded a handbook from the the u.s.where the same engine is quoted as. 40:1 with Tillotson carb. In the u.s. I think the engine was only used in snowmobiles. WHY the difference ? Carburetor type or temperature or ......

I was told that the ratio is actually specified by the OIL MANUFACTURER, not the engine manufacturer.
That is why the same engines from 50 years ago can run well on 32:1 or 40:1 mixtures with newer synthetic oils.

hmmm but both these were ratios as given in the 50's , and  they both refer to the LS400 engine the only difference would seem to be the carburetor . that word itself is interesting as there are several acceptable spellings of the word carburettor - i seem via spell check to have ended up with the American spelling which looks odd to us English.the German manual does not specify the oil - the U.S.says "regular gasoline oil 40 weight , AMF oil , is this our 40 grade straight oil . still looking for a reason for the difference in ratios . Wilksie , of this forum what do you use in your LP400 engine ? and why ?
