Open Day at The Hammond Collection
« on: June 27, 2014, 09:43:57 PM »
Hi all, I'm new here but not to the world of microcars. I am looking for information regarding the date of the Open Day this year. I know it's usually the last Sunday in July, is this the case this year?

Hi Mark and welcome to the nut house!

Open day is 27th July. Hope to see you there. Has Dave converted you to Isetta ownership yet? ;D

Hi Bob, Thanks for the welcome and the confirmation of the date. After another year of working on Isettas with Dave I find my resolve to NOT own one is even stronger. I find it interesting that when a problem or fault appears with a customer's car Dave's response is usually either "That's a design fault!" or "That's one of those weaknesses!" I am concerned about the lack of fuses in the car; just one to protect only the indicators, horn, brake lights and wiper motor. That leaves everything else unprotected, scary!!

Hi Mark

Its the back up heater system common to many British cars. With the Isetta you get the extra option of a heated seat, by leaving the battery posts exposed. Why didn't Volvo think of that?

Yes that doesn't inspire confidence does it.  Dave that is, not the fuse situation! ;D

Yes Al, I remember Dave asked me to get into one to adjust the door lock. Within a few moments there was a nasty smell in the car, and it wasn't me. I ignored it at first but then smoke was rising from below, PANIC!!! I've never got out of any car quicker. Dave came running with the CO2 extinguisher and all was well. Exposed springs and exposed battery terminals are not a good combination. Pure madness fitting the battery INSIDE the car in the first place. I took a friends Messerschmitt for an MOT test some years ago and the tester failed it for having the battery inside the car. He said it was "Plain dangerous." He waffled on about Hydrogen gas in confined spaces, it made sense to me.

Things do not look good for me then as my G-wiz has eight whopping great batteries inside the car. Passes the MOT every time!

Indeed gas bottles live outside. But the odd green dweller reaching 10,000 feet is probably OK, Bob. Interesting observation. Bats in or out?

Isetta needed the Bat in the door jam instead of the counterbalance.

Yes, only for the RHD version though.
What makes Marks point less valid is that with Isetta's the carbon monoxide from the leaky exhaust manifold will get you long before a smidge of hydrogen! ;D

Design faults would make an interesting thread topic.
I am starting a new one and lets see if owners will be honest about the design faults on there beloved favourite cars. See new thread, this one was supposed to be about the open day.

If you do Barry, you may find that you will need an IC on a daily basis there after.  ;D
