Lloyd Alexander
« on: May 30, 2007, 06:43:03 AM »
I'm swapping a bike tomorrow with a guy in Littlehampton who's also restoring a RHD 1950's Lloyd Alexander (it came from Hong Kong apparently).

I suggested he joined the club and come along to Amberley in August. He says he's already in the Borgward Club. Anyone on here got one of these? It might encourage him to join.

Hello:  I have a 1959 LLoyd Alexander TS, LHD, also numerous mechanical parts. They're a great little car, fun to drive.  The Alexander has steel body panels that just bolt together, like a meccano set.  The idea was so that in an accident, owners could just buy a new panel, and bolt it on themselves.  The Alexander 1957 - 1961 was an air-cooled 600 cc 19 HP four stroke twin, O H cam , all bearings were ball / roller, not shell,  with heads very similar to Porsche design, and the more luxurious Alexander TS  (1958 - 61) also similar engine but tweaked to 25 HP. The engine is nearly bullet-proof.  Very strong and reliable, and efficient.  Prior to the Alexander, the LP300 (1950 to 1951) was a fabric bodied 10 HP, and developed into the LP 400 13HP (1953 - 57), then to LP 600 19 HP, built alongside the Alexanders until closing in 1961 (another story).  A lot of people call any Lloyd an Alexander, which is not true.  If he belongs to the Borgward Club, then he should be correct, must be 1957 - 1961.  Lloyd also made in 1959 to 1961 a more modern design 900cc  45 HP Arabella.  In Australia, a different version of the Alexander was made, with local panels but same drive train, called a Lloyd Harnett. These may have been exported to HK.  Ian.

There are seven German Lloyds on the Register including the very battered estate that is in the Hammond Collection.  It would be nice to have some more please.

I gave David Burt from Rustington a print out of this link, so hopefully he'll be in touch.

His is a '59 RHD from Singapore. I've had a look at it and it's very solid. He's also got some engine spares.

He now has my Zundapp 201S, which should go well with his Borgward Isbella.
