My renewal from DVLA arrived and in between the threats of dire consequences and sorn options there was a more clearly offered
'DO IT ONLINE' . Last year this service failed to locate my valid insurance so I thought 1 year on what can go wrong.
Started well chose tax online then it jumped to my registration number all well again BUT THEN the manufacturer had to be chosen from their drop down list only. No prizes for guessing that Messerschmitt is missing from the very long list and its a compulsory question. So onto the automated phone service where the male electronic voice asked for my registration and then the 16 digit number from the renewal-this option was not offered online - the voice assured me that my disc would arrive within 5 days. Only time will tell.
Anyone know someone at the DVLA who can add manufacturers or request the 16 digit no. online!!!!!!
Another non improvement with closure of local offices
-
I think you are wrong on the closure of local offices although my local office was excellent several where I have sent people to obtain age related numbers did not have a clue and returned items across the counter saying they could not process these documents Whereas we have had very few problems with Swansea I think a lot has to do with who you speak to I have always found the staff at Swansea very helpful!

But ... once you've ticked the options to confirm that you have the V5C and you know about charges, etc, the FIRST thing the DVLA online form asks you for is the 16-digit "V11 reminder reference number".
Only if you haven't got that do you go further down the page and enter the registration number and V5 (logbook) number.
Even then, it doesn't ask you for the make - it tells YOU the make.
What site were you on??
-
Hi, was expecting as you describe used (or rather failed to use) www.gov.uk/taxdisc the it took me to a direct.gov site
having put in reg number thought it would know from that alone the details!! still next year or when I get an MOT for one of the isettas will dig around more
-
I find the online tax disc/sorn site brilliant to navigate. I've only had one problem and that was when an insurance didn't show up on it, then i had to use the post office.
The main reason i started to use the site was a few years back i went to the post office a few days after you were supposed to get a new tax disc with my renewal notice. The post office said i needed my log book as they couldn't use the reminder. So i went home, type in the number from the renewal and got my new tax disc no problem.
I explained to the postmistress what i did and she said, well if they accept it online i guess we will have to.
Support your local post office and save it from closure, only if they stop choosing what rule they want to follow that day!

Well, the website you quote certainly takes you to the right place, which operates as I described. I just tried it: it doesn't ask you for your reg number, and it doesn't ask you for the make!
The site linked from there which does ask you for those things is "Vehicle Enquiry", which is used when you want to check details of a vehicle, such as its date of registration, its emissions, engine size, and when the tax is due. (Incidentally, I tried this "Vehicle Enquiry" for a Messerschmitt of which I happen to know the number. The list of makes didn't include Messerschmitt, but I chose "other..." from the list, and typed "messerschmitt" in the "other make" box - and up came the details, no problem.
It's "Apply for a Tax Disc" that goes to the right place. ;)

Currently the DVLA is to be merged with three other bodies and there is a consultation sight where you may comment. Have not the link to hand. The plan is to Internet the majority of activity. Going to be hard for the outright technophobe to do car stuff if so.

Unusually a happy ending-- the years shmittax arrived fit and well.
Thanks for suggestions where I went wrong

Unhappy ending
Just taxed a normal car and found I was charged £40 over the renewal sheet amount.
I was tricked by a clone website identical to DVLA with very small watermarked print explaining charges
I phoned DVLA they are trying to get the site shut down but struggling as it appears to break no rules
So just beware speed readers! this also explains the trouble I had that I mentioned at the start of this post
DVLA 10/10 helpful and quick answer also suggested way to get most of £40 back wait and see if this happens
Thought it strange that there was nowhere to enter the 16 digit number on the DVLA renewal
-
This is the genuine DVLA site. It's the one I use, no problems.

Funny enough I landed on that clone website last week when I was renewing the discs for Thumper and my G-wiz. I realised something was wrong when it tried to charge me for two tax exempt vehicles. What a mad country we live in where this stuff goes down and its not illegal! >:(
-
Hi refund maybe progressing had email offering refund less £8 admin so accepted, wait and see if money arrives!
Clone site is taxdisc-direct.co.uk
No chance for the man in the street if DVLA cannot close them
Just keep flagging up the scams
Not microcar related had a text this morning saying my order from ee will be delivered Sat (today) and a link to change delivery time.
1. I had not ordered anything
2. EE when phoned confirmed so -- and suggested do not accept any delivery claiming to be from them if anything arrives
Now to find the correct tap for the threads in the little bracket the hold the pigs ear on to my Isetta ( back on topic)
-
seems to be 4ba i only have the lens not the bracket ( possbly 6ba but i don't think so . ba always used on small electrics at the time wasn't it ?
-
Much more rewarding talking threads (real ones ) reminds of me of the nut screws taxdisc applicant and bolts paraphrased very old launderette joke
Yes indeed 4BA thank you

I'm sure its 4ba if Richard has checked. Funny though, I have noticed a lot of electrical stuff uses the odd ba sizes, 3,1 etc.
-
Doesn't that stand for British Association? Are we still allowed to say 'British'?
-
hi bob you are very quiet recently , i gave a guesstimate as i only have the lens here not the threaded bracket - you know me and lenses - i just love 'em - got a few going on ebay sunday night :)
-
I would check it myself but Thumper is still in storage, I usually would have had the car out by now for the spring/summer but I have just been too busy.
I'm not losing interest but when spare time is limited I would rather be doing things with microcars than just talking about them.

If your into threads, buy a Berkeley. They have just about all the ones you could have in Britain at the time plus metric if someones been at it. Argh! Just when you might have cracked that there are the pop rivets of differing sizes. Berkeley owners have been known to be found unconscious next to walls.
