Title: Scootacars at the NMCR 2007
Post by: Grant Kearney on August 23, 2007, 11:00:07 AM
Calling all Scootacar owners
2007 brings the 50th Anniversary of the launch of the Scootacar prototype so it would be appropriate to get a large number of Scootacars present at this years National Micro Car Rally.  In previous years there has often been one or two Scootacars present so lets make a real effort this year and get 10 !.  So if you have a Scootacar, regardless of condition can you bring it along to Huntingdon race course this year?  Please pass the word around so those who don't access the forum know.  For those of you, who may think I am mad, then yes you are correct but I am more than half way to meeting the target of 10 so far but now need your help.

Having attempted the same sort of thing last year with my conveyances, I wish you the best of British Luck!!!! I had 28 of the things due to appear and on the day got five, two of which were my own! If you have the same level of success as I did, you might get two....  Don't get me wrong though, I'm behind you all the way with the Scootacar Gathering. I haven't got one but I like 'em, particulerly the mk 1.  A few of you on this forum have Scootacars. Get them there! It'll make a nice change from Peels.....  ;D  ;)

Co-incidently, I set a new World Recold with my conveyance line last year for the most seen at any rally. What's the current recold for Scootacar's? (or any other micro come to that.....?)

Mine's going. And I'm really trying hard to get another Mk1 to turn up.  I think you'll be suprised Stuart on the day. I'm hoping for them going out on the road run.

About time the Scootacar took center stage. I adore them.  Fantastic outrageous shape..

Well done P50, that's the attitude I am looking for.  I am hopeful that there will be a good line up if not a record line up.  Keep working away at the Mk1 owner and ensure this machine makes it too.
Not sure what the record line up of Scootacar has been previously, but can't think of a NMCR that has had any more than 4 displayed previously. ;)  Does any one else know ?

We had 2 restored and 1 unrestored show up at The National Meet in the USA this summer at Micros in Madison
if you include the MK1 and MK2 that Bruce Weiner has in the Museum, that makes 5

I have to try and get a photo of the tight fitting car cover made for one of them. It was amazing and they transported the car with the cover on it.

Hi Jim,
Would be very interested to see a picture of the Scootacar and its cover.  I am concerned about trailering my Scootacar due to the body flex and possibility of the screens popping out or in.
Would also be keen to know the details of the Mk1 in poor condition that changed hands as the Madison event.
I am confident that we can beat the American record of 5 Scootacars at this years NMCR.  Any one else out there bring their's ??

I'll be there with my camera....

Well now Scootacar, I was all set to denounce you as being Stephen Boyd, but suddenly I realise you're not him! Just as well I said "Best of British luck" earlier, and not "Best of English luck" else you might have set your Haggis on my Ferret.  ;)  :-*

I think that often when people try to organise such things, their efforts are rarely rewarded, take for instance your attempt to have the world record of invalid carriages, and have only 3 people turn up in addition to you.A lot of the time most people prefer to simply posess rather than actually do anything with them.

Hi Stuart,
(1949 Argson Electric, 1973 Mini-Comtesse, & (hopefully) coming soon, a return to my roots!......)  ??? ???
What does this all mean?
ROOTS! Are you going gardening with Ferret?  Parsnips or dare I say it, Carrots!  ;D

So then Stuart, how did you discover my true identity?  Surely you can't detect my accent can you? Tell your Ferret he is safe in the mean time, my haggis is running around the glen chasing sheep  ;D
Stephen Boyd is a tireless worker on the Scootacar front and has stood steady at the helm since 1979 so can't be faulted for his dedication to the marque.  I am simply sticking my nose in, as usual and making a few phone calls/sending e-mails to Scootacar owners in the hope a few might listen and bring their cars along to the NMCR.  There is little effort at my end but hopefully the outcome might be significant and add to what

As a present for everyone, I present one of my favourite pictures of a Scootacar, taken 8th May 2002. Judging by the sticker in the windscreen, Stephen knows of it, but alas I doubt it will be at Huntingdon. Last I heard it had gone to Canada.....

Stuart, that same Scootacar can be seen here: http://home.comcast.net/~erend/ along with a Mk2 that Alan Hitchock had for sale a while back.

Hello Blob, alas the link doesn't register! This Scootacar (the pictured Mk 1) was indeed seen at the premises of Alan Hitchcock all those years ago.

Hi Stuart, the links working now, I had it joined to part of the sentence by mistake.  ::)

Well done Blob and Stuart.  This pale blue Mk1 (formally registered in the UK as WUN128) sadly won't be at this years NMCR but the Mk11 (formally DAT27C) did attend the Madison rally as Jim mentioned earlier.  Both are owned by Scootacar enthusiasts Kerry & Linda Erindson.  The Mk11 is now probably the best example around.  As mentioned, both passed through Alan Hitchcock

I'll find it a bit worrying if we can't usurp the Americans with regard to getting more than five Scoots to the National this year.

Surely there are many more still here? Not to mention distances in the US compared to this crowded isle?

How many actually drive down the road is another question however!!

N.B.

I understand Stuarts feret has unearthed the white prototype works Mk1 and will be unveiling it on the Sunday.

Will I still be around in 2027? hmmmmm, I think I'll keep you all guessing on my departure date, rather like a certain ex-Prime Minister.....

Mind you, if our editor Tony promises to stay put, I'll stay put too. My current stockpile extends to about the next seven issues or so at least so you're all stuck with me for a while longer.

By the way, shouldn't that Haggis be on a lead? That's a £40 fine round our way.....   ;D

Oh bugger Perry, you've spoilt my suprize for everyone now!  :o  (am I joking? Ask the ferret.....)

The record to beat is 7 ! :o.  The 1979 NMCR had 7 Scootacars present including the Mk4 owned and modifed by Henry Brown.  Henry Brown presented the prizes at the same event.

Will we be getting the Mk 4 this year? After that artice a short while back, I'd like to see it........

Many thanks to all the Scootacar owners who made the effort at the weekend ;D.  6 Mk1s and 3 Mk2s, not bad at all and 2 more than the previous record of 28 years ago.  Would any one have believed me if I predicted more Scootacars than Bonds or Berkleys ??.  A very big thank you to Jim and Terry for such a great event, fun was had by all and a good turn out of cars and enthusiasts.

Just one question about the Scootacar lineup. Who's was the simply geourgus pale blue Mk 1? I fell hopelessly in love with it the moment I saw it......  :-*

(I really need to get out more!)

Are you sure it was the pale blue one and not the darker blue one  ;)
Title: Re: Scootacars at the NMCR 2007

Darker blue one?  ???, Oh, you mean the one owned by the mad Scotsman!  s'OK I supose......  ;D  :-*

Funnily enough, I've just been looking at my photos of the pale blue one again, (I really really do need to get out more!) and I suddenly rembered one of the bubble jumble stalls had a copy of "Balken Roads to Istanbul" for sale. I saw it quite early on and was going to go back & take a closer look with a view to purchasing. Only trouble is, I didn't get a chance to get back to the stall. Therefore, is there anyone who was there who can rember who it was that had it so I can do what I should have done when I first clapped eyes on it?  Many ta's.

Prob Mr Boyd who happens to own that pale blue Mk1 you lust after and may have had the book on the Scootacar Register Stall.

Oddly enough the pale blue machine has a remote connection with you Prof Cyphus. It was an invalids machine from new modded with hand controls.

PG is a fine original old girl.

However Stuart, you have more chance of getting that Mk1 as taking a modest dump in the Queens handbag.    ;)

Carry on.

Many ta's indeed for that P50, I'll make some enquierys.....

That's very interesting that 455 PG was originally a disabled drivers model, as entierly co-incidently, I've been toying with the idea of devoting some or even all of my next Register Page to the disabled application Scootacars including their (admitidly fatal) connection with Mike Hawthorn the racing driver.  What do you say Scootacar fans? Do you want me to go ahead and write it?  As an extra special treat, here's an advert from a 1958 Magic Carpet magazine to get you all in the mood............

I'd be delighted to learn of the disable spec Scootacars. Especially with regard to how the mech's were fitted and/or modded..

On Stephens car it appears the steering column is canted back more than standard on a special bracket. But it is a late car with no LEP lights from the works.    It may have been changed on all of them?

I wait with baited breath for you piece...

P.S. Stuart, I think you should endevour to get a Scoot. They have such fantastic styling. I didn't get bored following Grants car for 80miles. Perhaps only a TG has a better rear end aspect. (other than some of the hotties from Girls Aloud!!  Ooh err Missus :-*).

For those keenly awaiting the Disabled Scootacar artice, some news. I've had a chat with Stephen (it was indeed him that had the copy of Balkan Roads) and by amazing co-incidence, he has been thinking for quite some time of doing just such an artice for Scootabout, therefore I shall leave this article to him, (in fact I've just given him all the details I have on the things)  as he knows the Scootacar much better than any of us. So what are you waiting for, Scootacar fans? Join the Scootacar Register NOW!!!!  I just have.....

Now all you need is a Scootacar Stuart!!  (At least it can keep up with town traffic as opposed the the Comtesse...)

Perhaps you can give the latter to your ferret when you get a Hunslet machine?  There was a ropey MK2 for sale at the national.  Any good to you?!!
