Camaraderie's one thing but spending two days grinding along on autoroutes and autobahns is not my idea of fun in a 9hp tricycle. I respect the lads that do it but both Ollie and I prefer to get that aspect out of the way. Last years KR UK national was driven there in both our KR's.
KR's are a product from over half a century ago. Yes they will get you to the German show but so will a P50 if you have the time and inclination. You're a sitting duck and on a long climbing hill you're down to 38mph in 3rd.
See you at Maryport. Unless of course you don't go.
Simple answer if you do not like cruising at 55-58 mph on the motorway network, I used to grab a handy truck to pull me along, is to get off them and use a planned route cross country. After all having decided to make a trip of it there is time and you can avoid population centres and stiff climbs. Remember that while the car was made with Autobahns in mind it was driven at a time when many of these big roads did not exist. The terrain only becomes demanding when you reach Germany anyway. On the lowlands it is head winds that cause more grief but joy if it is a tailwind. Groningen to Emden at an average of 60 mph, what a blast! Unfortunately this off piste motoring requires use of a map and concentration due to the lack of gadgets people feel they now need to pick their noses but it is far more interesting than a motorway. Lunch is cheaper too as it will be in a proper cafe/bar not a Roachranch. Perhaps I did not make this point of using time to enjoy the drive clear. I agree that thrashing up and down motorways is a bit tedious in a Schmitt but it saves time. Answer is take time out of the equation. Not all can afford to do this.
Later Story Rallies were blessed by a convoy of lowlanders who used to convoy via 'b' roads and lanes as part of their event. It became very popular.
Malcolm proved doing a DWAC Rally by Peel is quite possible as they can go on the cycle paths.
All things are possible but each to his own. I just think you are missing out on part of the fun is all. But then it may not fit well with your 'real' life which seems ever more demanding for most.
Maryport, you might find me on the gate or doing blood wagon duties should I remain fit as I am rostered apparently even though not an MOC member! Interesting turn of events I choose to take as a privilege of person over paucity of MOC volunteers. Schmitt is still not done but I hope to have it so. It will be untested so an adventure in itself should I get the time to do it and then drive it. There is that word again time. I had hoped to drive it down to Bath. Now we are threatened with that being the last in the series for several reasons - Wynford does it pretty much solo and the money is running out. So far no local help seems about and it is the only regular Southern Weekend Rally I can think of. A watershed moment if it goes.
