Bob
Do you want this to reach the Facebook contacts and enthusiasts (could be big) or keep it within the Rumcars group?

I think that needs to be answered by Jean as it is her event. Having said that I am sure Jean and family would like to see the farm full of Microcars on the day.

I would like to reach as many genuine microcar enthusiasts as possible but great numbers of the curious general public could be a problem in our small rural community   I do intend to email local Rumcar members and friends who have joined us before.Jean

Right then, it's only days away now, lets get some talk going on it! My work has just confirmed that there's no vans available for this weekend so I'm now about to fall back on my contingency plans. I'll be there somehow, place your bets on how & with what...  ;)

DEar Bob

Sorry to inform you that Ken has had to cancel his trip to Europe due to family matters so he will not be there. But I have invited another well known person and if he comes you might want to get his autograph. It will all depend on the weather. We can also get Stuart to sign copies of his book.

Does this mean Stuart will be arriving in a Reliant Regal???

Would this be a chap with a double-barelled surname who lives in Wales?  If so YIPPEE! & I'll bring my copies of his books for a signing if so!

Of my (& Elvis's) book, this is at the printers right now, and the official launch is due for Sunday 12th September at the Tamworth Heritage Weekend Reliant Gathering. I won't have copies in time for the Open Day alas, but I am hoping to have some sneak preview copies at the National the weekend before the Tamworth Launch, but again, this depends on publishers turnaround.

It won't be a Reliant Regal I'll be turning up with....    ;)

Its Father-Christmas? The Snow-Man then? A very large amphibian called Kermit The-Frog, though personally my favourite is Mr Jackson? Weather dependant double barrelled celebs, there are so many.

Dear Bob, Stuart, Al and Jonathan

The person in question has been invited but has notyet confirmed HE will come. He does not have a double barreled name and does not come from Wales but he does have a Welsh name.

I do hope he comes otherwise you will all blame me.

See some of you on Sunday

Hopefully this chap is well-known for actually having had something to do with bubblecars & not just someone famous for being famous. The cars and the Hammonds are the reason of the day, not the buttering up of the ego of anyone who has nowt to do with this world....

Hmmm, Welsh name, should I push harder to get the Bamby there? Is that a clue in the right direction?

Yes Stuart, get the Bamby there because I want to see it, never mind the mystery celeb!!

Chris, He had better be there after all this fuss and as Stuart said, it better not be someone of the ilke of Chesney Hawks!!!
You have got me thinking now though. Johnathan Ross is a bubblecar man but then again so is Michael Barrimore but we dont want the likes of him! Cleo Lane has a Bond?

Dear Rumblers

The person in question is not a celebrety, but he is known to you all but few have ever met him. He is probably reading this and thinking " I wonder who this mystery person is". He will not be arriving is a Microcar but has a keen professional interest in them.

How many more clues do you want?

Oh, no blame on added bonuses even if they do not quite work out. Idris the Dragon? Jones the Bubble? Merlin the Merddin Emrys?

Hi Chris
What is the secret about the guest at Rumcars open day - I thought the plan was to get as many Microcars to the event - not turn it into a guessing game - If he not arriving by Microcar I agree with Bob - I am not interested in seeinig him.

I have sorted out a collection of my microcar books and a Kleinwagen and Roller mags ( in German from the 50's ) to bring to the show - some are rare and some not so rare - It  my first showing of these books and I am ofering to my friends ( at Jean's ) first before I take the on to the National Rally.

I plan to drive down in my "numbers" Trojan and the books will fill up the floor space in the back of the car ( there are over 60 items ) I will not be bringing down any brochures I will wait till the National Rally to bring those ( I have sorted out over 300 Brochures ) and I have some on the Nobel which I shall save for Jonathan.

                                                                                                                                                                     Mike

strange g-o-g-g-o ! mike w-w been mentioned and i thought you regarded him highly . he is a regular visitor to the stand at Beaulieu and very welcome you make him too.  highly respected on all things motoring and particularly interested in micro's . a legend , his columns/pages in various mags is always the first page i turn to.

oops re-read all previous on this item and its clear the possible guest does not live in wales and is not double barrelled , completely got it wrong again  :-[

Hi Richard
Not saying that the honoured guest might be welcome - that Chris's is information that it is being kept a secret - I thought the idea was for more people to come - especially if they knew the name of the guest.
                                                                                                                                                              Mike

Is the guest Mike Shepherd?

Its worth coming to find out who the guest is. Even better if he then does not arrive, or no announcement is made that he is present and we are left guessing. I like it, great fun. Why would you not want to talk to folk not in a Microcar but micro related? Perhaps it is not worth coming after all. However I do think it would be great to revive the Story ethic of driving the car to the event and making a weekend of it. However that is a lot more complex than inviting a few folk for a day. The obvious venue for a driving it there initiative is Burford unless a private land owner wishes to underwrite such an enterprise. I think the idea has mileage in it, nah ha!

burford wouldnt happen to be on your doorstep by any chance al . not very central for oos oop north  ;)
Title: Re: RUMCARS OPEN DAY 2011. See the flyer here!
Post by: Big Al on July 29, 2011, 11:44:01 AM
This is very true. However its nearness to me is not the prime reasoning. It is where the initial national 'drive it to the event' rallies happened and thus has some resonance and history that would encourage those able and willing to participate to make the effort. I would love to nominate Weston Park which also hosted events that were perhaps more inclined to the 'drive it' ethos, a better venue in many ways and central, but we would not get in now as we are too small and/or would need to book at least a year in advance.
The nearness of Burford is actually a minus since I cannot really get out of helping to organise such an event! Given the negativity of several organisations such an event would have to be self or privately backed and create its own following so it would probably harder work than might be imagined. The question remains, is there enough interest in the South to make the event worth while. We know the North harbours some very active drivers, the South seems a lot less active save for a couple of hotspots and individuals. Also the event would still need to cater for a larger number of support vehicles over a weekend than it used to, which given the facilities available in the area suggests a two site event with the Cotswold Wildlife Park playing Saturday due to the habit of folk going home early and thus it being more suitable to have a round robin run out on Sunday so it is less noticeable when folk drift off home through the day. Indeed the very set up Otto came up with for Story all those years ago. This suggests a serious run out on Friday, we used to do about 110 miles at Story on a Bank Holiday, and a Thursday informal ramble. To really match that it immediately suggests Easter or May BH in which case the days slip one back. Trouble is many folk do family things over BH and that would bar the driving of the Micro as planned.
If that event was successful then there is every reason to see it move round the country, not least to prevent the run out repeating itself. Clearly good touring areas would be a requirement with bubble friendly infrastructure. See ideas like getting permission to drive over Barmouth bridge from the powers that be. If your small, use it to advantage.

Congratulations to Jean and family for a super day out, very relaxed as always and a good selection of well prepared and roadworthy cars, glorious weather and a great location.
Good to meet up with the great and the good in Rumcar ( that is to to say those that did not come are not great or good) as it is the only time that some of us meet face to face.

I look forward to next year.

Also thanks to Jamie for helping me change my tyres, free from the flaky whitewalls [or should I say biege walls] at last! I look forward to seeing the new pictures of the cars which I believe will be used on our new web site when its ready.

Thanks to everyone who came and made it all worth while.  Thank you for bringing  such a nice selection of cars and being so generous with the donations.  I would appreciate copies of any pictures that were taken (I was too busy talking to take any!) because I have promised Tony and Lynne I would send them some.  Or better still email them direct to Tony at tonyrumcars@aol.com  They want to be kept in touch with what is going on as  they are with us in spirit even if they can't be with us in the flesh.  Lynne has just enjoyed the company of her daughter who lives in America now and had the pleasure of meeting her first grandaughter for the first time which was good but she felt too tired to cope with the journey down to the Farm so soon after.  Thank you once again from the Cooks and Hammonds for making the weekend most enjoyable.   Jean

They are big compared to Peels!

I find there the result of a Nobel and a Schmitt.

Same tandem seating as a schmitt, similar steering bar, thin and tall, and a bit like a Nobel (the features)

I can't see it on my computer but I suspect if it is on the right of the Gordon it is Andrew's racing car from the 60's a mini based Aurora once driven by Trevor Taylor and his sister Ann.  Definitely NOT a micro but it was pulled out the garage because the chap who is interested in it said he would be there, but didn't arrive!!!!!!!    Jean

Thanks Jean. I was intrigued as in the photo it looks a lot like the front end of Lance Reventlow's rear-engined Scarab sports car racer. Obviously a very interesting car nevertheless if a bit outside the realm of Rumcars.

Not the one that used to be owned by Ron Barnacle? I was saving up to buy that but missed out. Had something to do with Bill Blydenstein. I would still like it, unusual car. Probably still saving up though!
