Title: Closing the local DVLA offices
Post by: Bob Purton on May 04, 2012, 01:13:57 pm
You may have read that the government propose to close all local offices in 2013. This could spell real problems for classic vehicle owners. In my experience sometimes the only why to resolve a problem is to speak to someone face to face. If you want to sign a petition to oppose this move sin here.

Thanks Bob for drawing this to the notice of the Forum.

I have signed it and I hope that everyone on the Forum will.

I do agree that sometimes, especially with our weird and wonderful cars, the only way to sort out a problem is face to face with someone knowledgeable at a VRO and you don't want to have to travel miles to do that.   Jean

Hmm. Oxford VRO, they used to be LVO, is a mixed blessing. It deals with vehicles so where do you suppose it is? Yep, in the middle of Car hating Oxford where you cannot park a vehicle nor drive to it. For inspections you have to go to Bicester, some 15 miles up the road, when there are a limited number of slots and thus can be a long waiting list. In the old days you could go to Swindon LVO and pull a guy out to look at your wreck, sorry rare car, on a trailer and have a discussion. Now you take a number, sit about thinking of cheese at the supermarket delicatessen, and end up registering a truckle of Herefordshire Pink Cantal by mistake. That is unless you get the awkward git who seems bent on making life as difficult as possible for any 'customer'. How is it you can see three differing people and get three differing answers to a simple question? You then find all of those differ from DVLA's opinion. The systems a bloody mess but will closing part of it resolve that? Experience says no.

Are VRO workers called VROkas?

I know that even speaking with a local office member of staff can have its problems too Al but just think of the alternative, dealing exclusively with the Welsh ! :D :D

Quite frankly I am getting to the point where I do not want to talk to any of these officials. I think it is better to hold inert but valid ID papers for collectors cars and only have registered cars you seriously wish to use on the public highways. That way there is no paper chase and the cars 'do not exist' for the info to be available or accessed files legally or illegally and be used against me for theft, heckling, extortion or taxation. If and when I sell the ID papers are there for anyone else who wants to register the thing. Effectively much has become self propelled sculpture if I do that but the thought of owning 40 live vehicles fills me with dread as to what could happen in the near future in a bankrupt western world.
