Title: Paint question.
Post by: Bob Purton on October 31, 2013, 09:06:23 am
I want to brush paint the interior of my project car, its fibre glass so needs to be a paint that bonds well to fibre glass and which is also forgiving enough to be brushed on. Any ideas?

A starting point would be the FG boating industry.

Good idea Barry. Looks like a polyester based paint is the one to use.

International Paint Ltd.
1 Wellington Park, Hedge End
Southampton, Hampshire SO30 2QU
Tel: 01489 77 50 50

This paint company manufacture finishes that can be brushed for GRP yachts etc.
They have one called Toplac.

See their website:  http://www.yachtpaint.com/gbr/diy/default.aspx

Hope this helps.

Just found a boat shop in Eastbourne near to me that sells this paint and loads of different stainless fixings that I've been hunting around for.

Note to self: "Must get out more!"

Dear Rob

Excellent. I see they also do an anti-fouling paint, presumably for dog owners!

Thanks Rob. Now I know what to ask for I will call in to our local boat shop and see if they stock it. I want a satin finish which I see International Toplac do. Could be the answer.

I use that paint on my Invacar bumper to avoid hitting pheasants.

hi bob,
just after a big wash with acetone solvent to remove grease and mold wax; just spray polyurethane 2k paint ( same than exterior body car paint ).... and that's all !
evenly a primer basecoat to get fiber 's sweetness ....

I did the inside of the AC P50 with a tin of Ferguson Grey Tractol (That's the brand, not a mis-spelling) enamel paint and a two-inch brush. It went on brown but dried overnight to perfect light grey. Being paint designed to go on a working tractor, there's not much that will damage it in the future.

 Cheap too....   8)

Thanks for the suggestion Stuart, did you clean the surface with acetone before you painted? I ask because although Jean do and others have told me to do that, surely any wax releasing agent would be on the outside, not the inside?
I want dark grey and a satin finish though so I don't think the one you used is for me although maybe the dark grey undercoat would do the job. Its only the inner wheel arches and inside the nose that will show, the rest is panelled over anyway. I will make more enquiries. Thanks again.

When I bought my Peel back to life in '76 the interior spotted paintwork as used on the walls of public toilets was unobtainable. As the GRP was breaking down I brushed on two gel coats to stabilize it. As you can imagine the smell was something out of this world, as I was at the time! "Peace brother and all that"  ;D  When it was dry i didn't bother to wash with acetone or anything else as I can remember, just gave it two coats of Dulux gloss grey. I looked as if it stood the test of time, 36 years, when it came up for sale at Coy's auction last year.

Did you also coat the inside of your Tourette with some resin? I ask because when I went to see it at Waynes place the inside of the shell looked much more stable and solid than Jeans one.

Looked at some of my old photos to check and can see that I must have done by the inner shiny surface of the rear engine compartment.
