Title: Any Villiers experts out there?
Post by: Bob Purton on May 23, 2008, 04:02:59 PM
Is the gearing on an 11e engine the same as on a 9e? I have an 11E engine with a 16 tooth sprocket, half inch pitch and I intend to drive an eight inch wheel with a forty tooth sprocket. Will that give me a reasonable microcar gearing and top speed? I'm not up on this side of things but I thought that if 11e gearing was the same as 9e I could copy scootacar sprocket sizes and get a reasonable set up. Can anyone enlighten me ?

Bob,
Can you post the first 5 digits of the 11E engine number and I will look up my books and can tell you all the gear ratios.  Generally speaking the 11E was fitted to Invalid vehicles and the ratios were different to the 9E.  Ask any Bond owner who has fitted an 11E and then wonders why it won't do a hill start  ;D.  First gear ratio is different and most have a higher gear ratio which is fine for high speed cruising but no good for the hills in Scotland !

Thanks Grant. I will get on to it and find the numbers.
