Title: We Brits love talking about the weather
Post by: marcus on February 02, 2009, 02:36:19 PM
Read the subject, then wonder why has no-one posted yet! Here in Beautiful Downtown Bermondsey, S.E. London we now have about 9"/14mm of snow and it's still falling. My Trojan sits under its tarps with snow drifted up to the windscreen. It has a 10"/16mm (measured) snow cap on its roof, looking like a dodgy haircut on a pro footballer. No planes, no buses, and very little road traffic, so it is amazingly quiet. The few wild birds are chowing down everything we give them like there's no tomorrow, maybe they know something. It's going to be windy tonight as well. The sandwich round did not turn up, so it was the emergency baked beans supply for lunch! The snow is so sticky that it is even covering the almost vertical sides and back of my Transit. Best snow I have ever seen in London

My photos are on my phone, and bearing in mind the fact that almost NO two items bearing any relation to computers/internet are ever compatible...how long do you think it will take me to get my phone to agree to work with my almost new mac, and then for the mac to agree to attach the pics?!
I do remember last years pix of micros in the snow

My photos are on my phone

easiest way is to EMAIL them to yourself from the phone, then they show up on the computer.
some phones/service providers make it extremely difficult to get your stuff off your phone any other way.
In the States, you could have a Motorola RZR and you could get the pics off it with one provider (Cingular), the other provider would not allow it! (Verizon)
don't know how it works in the UK.

meantime, here are 3 micros in the snow, can you ID them all?

Jim, that sounds fine in theory, but to email them to myself I would have to put them on my old pc. This is happy with my phone, and my scanner, but refuses to go on internet! Like I said, no 2 pieces-of-anything-like-computer-equipment will ever agree to be compatible! My Dad's old Hi-Fi amp was made in England in the mid 50s. It has a fantastic warm sound and plays records, then he a few years later it worked with his new radio. Then we added a cassette deck, then a reel to reel tape deck, then a CD player, then MP3. As computer twats had no part in its design it works flawlessly with equipment invented over half a century after it was made!
Back to subject, the one on the right looks like a Prinz?

;D  Now all we need is a shot of a Gordon in the snow & the day shall be compete!   ;D

Really, when one thinks about it Bob, there's more than a few similarities between old Groombridge & our Grant. Neither of them can/could bring themselves to thin out their collections of micros, so the pile just grows & grows....   ;D  ;)  :-*

The weather is playing havoc with the restoring, I painted my Nobel pedal box yesterday afternoon, I just battled my way through the snow down to the workshop to have a look and the paint is still wet!

Stuart, I didnt know you appreciated 50/60's instrumentals? Here is a list of what we do, Walk don't run, Apache, FBI, Kontiki, Man of mystery, Frightened city, Fingle Blunt, The stranger, Shindig, Theme for young lovers, Midnight, Foot tapper, shadoogie, Peacepipe, The Savage, Dance on, Shazam. We gave up on Wonderful land and Atlantis because they sound a bit thin without the strings and the french horns!

Marcus, we are a Shadows tribute band, these tracks you mention are not Shads numbers! We do others but I couldnt think of them at 11.30 last night. The lead guitarist insists on doing some Duane eddy which I loath! Anyway, in the second set we get the microphones out and do the usual 60's vocals,

3 wheelers do not need a front number plate any more.
There was  another one in London yesterday. http://www.itvlocal.com/london/news/?void=283332
Also in todays "Metro" free paper.  http://www.metro.co.uk/e-metro

Dear Trident

Thank you for the link to EMetro. I never knew it existed. Now I do not have to drive to the station to get a free copy to read.

Isn't technology wonderful when it works.

No front number plate for three wheelers? What all three wheelers? Are you sure you dont mean just 50cc moped registered ones?
Title: Re: We Brits love talking about the weather
Post by: Trident on February 06, 2009, 11:22:18 AM
Yep, all 3 wheelers.
It is optional on older cars like ours, but illegal to have one  on new 3 wheelers. How silly is that?

see; http://www.numberoneshowplates.co.uk/number-plates.php
and http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2001/20010561.htm#6

"For motor cycles and tricycles certain other dictates exist. Tricycles and motorcycles fall in to two categories, those manufactured prior to 1st September 2001 and those manufactured on or after that date. For these type of vehicles those manufactured prior to the date of 1st September 2001, number plates can be displayed on both the front and the rear of the vehicle, however these vehicles by law are only obligated to display the rear number plate, the front number plate being optional. For these types of vehicles manufactured on or after this date only the rear number plate may be displayed."

Its all to do with the weight, the same as the fitting of seatbelts rule. If a three-wheeler is under (I think) 450kg, regardless of age, it does not need either seatbelts or front number plate, so stuff like Messerschmitt KR200's do not need a front plate, but if the vehicle is over that weight, ie, Reliant Jubilee Robin, it DOES require a front number plate.

Its all to do with the old head-in-the-sand rulemakers beliving no motorcycle can weigh more than 450kg & no car can weigh less than 450kg, hence all vehicles UNDER 450kg must therefore be of motorcycle origins & not need a front plate & all vehicles OVER 450kg must be of car origins & therefore has to have that plate.

From DVLA web site ----  Motorcycles and Tricycles
There are separate provisions for motorcycles and tricycles. Basically motorcycles
registered after 1.9.2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle.
Motorcycles registered before 1.9.2001 can display a number plate at the front but are
not required to.
Tricycles derived from four wheeled bodies i.e. saloon cars must meet the normal
requirements above whereas tricycles derived from motorcycles must meet the
requirements for motorcycles.

The 'elf and saftey brigade said "pedestrians would be sliced up with the front number plate on motorcycles so lets take them off".
This also means those great threewheeler trikes and not bubblecars that have a flat facing plate as far as I can make out.

Well The Lake Disrict was mild and very sunny, I was seriously over-dressed. Lots of snow and sleet blizzards, but as we headed North it got better. Hoodavthortit! On the tube I saw the Peel feature in Metro and was going to scan and post it today, but now I see I do not need to. I have a spare copy if anyone wants it

Reading the title of this thread brought back memories of a chap who ran one of our local newsagents back in the late 1970s. It didn't matter what time of day or week of the year his opening words on entering his shop were, "Change again? It'll come allright in the end" This went to every customer he served. If you called back in 20 minutes it was the same opener. A great guy, great times. :D

Just 6 days after 10"/25cm of snow, and London at a standstill today is sunny dry and warm, perfect to get the covers off my Trojan to air it out. It is not MOTd at present, so the next best thing to do with my after lunch coffee is to sit in strumming away on my favourite tenor ukulele, with the best acoustic that the world offers, clever people those Heinkel designers!

Today was so sunny and warm, I was able to take the covers off DUF, then sit on the bench outside to eat my lunch. Shoes and socks off, sandals on, then an after-lunch coffee in the Trojan, strumming my ukulele and working on a new tune, Annie the cat sitting beside me (she LOVES being in the bubble). Also, after a long wait I finally got paid today, HOORAY, so I have cleared loads of bills, and have a bottle of McKewan's Champion Ale (7.3%, and VERY nice!) cooling down for later.
Musicians among you might like to know that Ukuleles (especially the slightly bigger tenor ones) sound lovely in a Heinkel/Trojan, a rich, warm tone, loud and fairly close/intimate, but not claustrophobic - because of plenty of space and "reflective" glass and plastic. Also the width is comfortable, even for guitars. All that AND hydraulic brakes for when you get carried away with fast fretwork. Singing, or in my case "singing" is also nice.

Who designed the Kabine? Was he/she/they a musician?

Marcus, you are in good company, both Joe Brown and George Harrison, both keen Uke players but I dont think they played in bubblecars.

Yeah, well what do THEY know about anything?!

Actually, G.H. was good on uke, and a very keen member of the George Formby Society, so this thread is now going to be re-named "Here comes the Sun...hehe Turned out nice again, inti?"

BTW, speaking of GH and ukes, (and you being a git, a git, whoops, I mean guitarist !) you really HAVE to watch this on you tube:

"While my Guitar Gently Weeps" played by (get ready for this...)  JAKE SHIMABUKURO. There are several clips, of him doing this, so select the one where he is playing solo in Central Park, New York, sitting under a leafy canopy. Suggest you put a cushion on the floor.

You'll need it when your jaw drops. He is one of my more promising students ...
