Title: Look what we found, and bought! Schmitt Barnfind
Post by: Jonathan Poll on June 06, 2011, 07:10:25 PM
And you thought the days of the good old cheap barnfinds where over!

This is the Messerschmitt we found 10 years ago, but the guy didnt want to sell it. Yesterdazy, we went to a car meeting in the Nobel, on the way back, I asked my dad if we can go see the schmitt. He said ok, since we lost the pics, and I didnt even know what colour it was!

Luckily I asked, since usually when I ask, my dad says no, and this time, the owner said a guy popped round 2 days earlier, offering him 800 euros! Luckily he refused, we bought it for a tiny bit more.

It is chassis number 50213, 3rd oldest known!

It appears to have been resprayed, looking cloesly you can see overspray, abnd the guy did say the previous owner rolled it. That probably explains the broken dome, but it also has a different door, you can see original red paint under the cream.

All seems ok condition for the way its been kept, in a barn for 57 years! Rusty floor, a few dents, rust, respray, bent ali, but what do you expect!

We noticed a load of differences, all seem original, since its early. You can see it has a 175 air filter, early boot, different placement for the choke, my dad has never seen that before, in his 30 years of schùmitt experience, early rubber mat with the big eagle emblem (my dad heard of them, but ever seen any), low bonnet stay (quite lower than usual, so you cant lift it as much), weird brackets holding the boot, unusual way to hold the rear seat, my dad hasnt seen it either before, double front bumper, made out of 2 seperate pieces of ali, very unusual pocket on the front seat, my dad makes interior sets for the schmitts, and has never seen it, same for the interior covering the inside lof the boot, early door lock, rounded, not hooked, and a few more differences that are orignial, like some parts bolted, not welded (seems originally done)

Well, enjoy the pics!

(in a few replies, since I can only reply with 4 pics each time)

Fantastic. Persistence pays off. I regularly used to see a 200 in Shepherds Bush which had the double line of bumper trim but its ends were better finished off than the ones on yours.

Very much looking forward to seeing restoration work progressing on what seems potentially a very good car.

A very interesting car but not an easy restoration to keep original as nigh on everything will be different from the main stream spares available. Done well a most satisfying car to own and at a nice price. Where do you get the info on chassis numbers? I am consistently told no one has a comprehensive list of cars left. I have a private list running to 300 plus cars, not counted it. Certainly no one admits to one in Britain which considering there are reclaim numbers being issued sounds a bit odd as one of the requirements is accurate dating of cars.

There is quite a bit of talk about this car on the Schmitt Talk board right now.
I believe the the numbers list is from a private list being maintained in Canada.
One of the contributors to the discussion has the oldest known serial number KR200: 500008
another known vehicle is 500033.  So this car just bumped whatever was #3 to #4.

Hi Jim,

The car n# 500033 is Vic Hydes car, so our one is still n#3.

I dont know if we will restore it, I guess its best to keep it as original as possible, even if the paint is maybe not original, seems quite ood, I think a thourough clean, and make all of the mechanical parts like new, for safety. My dad said he may restore it, but lets hope it wont go like his tiger, stay in bits for 10 years!

Builders never finish there house, same case for restorers ;)

Glad my dad wasn't a gigolo then.

Would that be Peter Svilians doing the register? It seems odd to me that the two biggest clubs have not got a unified register. Indeed the research data and storage of original artifacts seems to have never figured very high as an activity in schmitting save as a private enterprise. Is that because the cars are a blast to drive meaning that there is less time spent being 'active' in a passive way?

I think Ralf Hough is doing the register.

I done a bit of T-cut on the schmitt, looking great! Gonna finish it in a sec :)
