Title: Wanted for a charity run
Post by: Bobbydog on June 28, 2012, 10:10:46 PM
Hi there, I joined this forum about a week ago, to try and find a three wheeled motor vehicle needed for a charity run next year.
I doesn't need to be a running vehicle, might be stuck in a garage for years. I don't mind.
It is needed for a cancer charity run to the four furthest points of the uk mainland plus the centre.
The charity is the McMillan trust for cancer care, there are a few rules a competitor must comply with.
1 at the time of the run the vehicle must be road legal.
2  the vehicle must not cost more than 500 at purchase
3. The cost of the whole run must not exceed 350.00

So as you can see it is quite strict.
If there is anyone who can help, or even put me in touch with someone local to me.
I am in Southampton , united kingdom.
This is one of many adverts I am placing all over the place to try and find a vehicle.
I would think for that price we are looking at a cheap reliant,
THANKYOU for taking the time to read this anyway, and I wish you a good day

Have you tried the Reliant forum? Should be able to find a good Reliant Rialto for that money.

I certainly have also an advert there, trouble is the location, if it can be avoided I do not want to have to travel to far.
Most reliants seem to be northward .
But if needs must then in the end I will have to, but thought I would see if anyone/anything is localism to Southampton/new forest area. If anything does come people's way just let me know please,.

That is a long drive as it would be The Lizard, Carrachadh Mor, Dunnet Head and a point near Lowerstoft. At least that cuts out the entire South East. The interesting one is which centre of Great Britain is chosen. Could be in Lancashire, Derbyshire or Warwickshire depending on your definition.

It is interesting that the normal point to point actually visits none of those places on the cardinal points of the UK mainland. The favourite being Land's End to John O'Groat's, a trip from a convenient nowhere to nowhere else but convenient. I never quite understood why, as having driven all those miles another 30 miles to get to the right place is not that great a deal. You then have something to talk about. Otherwise it is a bit like nearly climbing a mountain. Of course the opposing argument is that the simplified trip is now traditional. Indeed so and I have climbed Snowdon, by using the mountain Railway.

Would I want to do such a trip in a Microcar? Well yes, in the right sort of car like a Goggo or Schmitt and without some nurk issuing a time-scale so I could enjoy it. Funnily enough I would be less keen to do it in a Reliant but that is my bias. I would see the MIcrocar as a challenge but the Reliant not and just an excuse to be uncomfortable while opting for greater power and reliability. Why not use a Mini 850?

Putting a cap on expenditure does make the event more interesting as it restricts the sort of car that can be used. Ignoring the Micro scene the obvious choice for me would be a Citroen BX as it offers comfort on top of everything else. A more eccentric choice is only to be encouraged. A Reliant Rebel?

Hi big al.
Thanks for your input
The easterly point is the gas works road, Lowestoft by the way,
The only reason we chose a reliant is that the price still makes them reasonably accessible. The challenge was set by my brother who thought it up. And felty that a three wheeler would add a certain charm . god knows where the charm comes from.
Given the 500 budget any other three wheeler is impossible to purchase even though the petrol cost would be better. So reliant robin it is. I thank you for your contribution and look forward to contributing more

Big al
There is no time limit being imposed on the run, and hopefully most vehicles would be together or at least near each other, if you wish, we would welcome you and any others on board to join us and raise money for McMillan

Other trike at £500? It comes to something when there are so few. Might get a Lomax/Falcon but I would not be to keen on one of them in a Scottish gale. The other candidate would be a Bond 875. That would be well hairy and they do have a bit of a reputation in strong winds, though mods are known.

Of the four wheelers there is obviously more choice with things like Trabant, NSU Prinz if your lucky and so on.

No time limit is better as it allows for flexibility. In a few of these sort of runs I have done, years ago now, it was merely recommended that a certain place be reached each day where some camping/accommodation was available. Those who disappeared being left to sort themselves out unless they 'phoned certain numbers. I can think of two major failures needing a trailer. One time was sorted by Harry Rutgers and Leo Decker as it was near continent. The other a trailer from that persons home in the UK. Now we have affordable AA cover and mobile 'phones. How things have changed. In the early days you had a network of MIcronauts who would come out and help stranded cars. An introduction to many an interesting character.

I wish I knew what I was doing next year. It would be a great target to aim for as an adventure.

Thanks for all that info big al
Looks like reliant it is
Unless a donation !!!!!!!!
I am sure it will be an adventure. If I placed the route on here WOULD people place there location and numbers
Just in case
I look forward to others taking a look and maybe just maybe someone else to be crazy and come along.
It will be fun, we are fun people, that is how we thought up this crazy run. We already have one reliant.
Bought in Newton Abbott for 320 plus mot repairs and mot came in at 495.95 so it qualified
.

2 to go .

'Save a Plas' as Bond Info used to say. Better looking than many actually.

Saw that on eBay last night as well when I got back from hospital.
Emailed the seller and he told me it requires a total restoration, and in his estimation would cost way in excess of the stipulated 500.00
Also, he may be biased, but he is hoping for the high end of bidding ,not the pennies it's at , at the moment
The quest continues.

Better then just stumping up for an unknown.

I had a girlfriend who had a hip transplant and became fashionable so I left.

Hi all ,
The lady in question is 71 years young, and bought the car new, up until then she only ever rode a steppe 90
The car has always been garaged, and locally garage serviced
All servicing and repair bills and all mots are with the vehicle.
So I am pleased.

Well that is two vehicles we have now.
One robin and one Rialto. So we are getting there.
