Title: Invacar Wanted, Found and Being Restored
Post by: Fraz13 on October 22, 2014, 11:35:02 AM
Hi, I found your forum after dealing with a really nice guy who told me he had a few micro cars which I was very interested in, he told me there was a forum so I went looking as I am looking for an AC or Thundersley Model 70 Invacar.

I am disabled myself but that's not the reason, I've just always loved them as a family friend was the local repairer of them when I was a kid

I'd like one that's registered so can be used on the road but condition not that important as long as its complete.

I understand these are quite hard to find but hopefully I'm in the right place to source one

Cheers Fraser

There are some Mk12 variants left here. Price depends on condition but starts at £600. Being sold in the UK for the owner, who lives abroad. V5 would need to be applied for, but I do not see a big problem with that and it can be included in the deal if its a worry.

Hi Big Al

I should have said its a Model 70 I really want, However can you show me some pics of MK12's?

Cheers Fraser

Not sure this is really the correct place to fill with space eating images. Also I have not got much in the way of pictures as all these cars are work in progress and thus a picture freezes their development. I do not really do the picture thing. If fo9lk are interested they tend to pop round.

ICR is the place really, but its on clockwork Internet and suffers downtime. There are pics of Mk12 on the web.

Not sure I want to sell my good Type 70. They are appreciating well. Maybe an offer might change my mind.

Thanks for the reply, I would pop round but your nearly 400 miles away so quite a trip. I have no problems travelling to buy something I have seen, but I feel 800 miles that I may come home empty handed is a bit too far.

As for your Type 70, its what I want, again I couldn't offer as I haven't seen it, Is it registered for the road? What's the condition like? Does it run and drive? Does it need anything? and instead of upsetting people I'd rather you had a idea on price.

So who bought the cars? My guess is Barry Lee.

My Mk D has a 11E ex invicar engine , fitted 250 pot and 4 speed std ratio box with kick starter , and other mods to the gearing ,
so that's where two 11E's ended up , the other is a complete unit on the shelf , great engines most had done low mileage .

I picked it up last Friday, Its a great wee runner, starts, drives and stops, everything works. The body was straight but the paint had lots of cracking but the fibreglass is fine. Only one split. The paint is also covered in blisters, looks like its been painted badly. Whoever painted it also painted the window rubbers as well as aluminium gutters and other rubber seals. So first job is to strip the paint and clean the rubbers up. New paint and build it back up and it'll be good to go hopefully.

with the sander attachment on the drill and wet & dry paper , 'loosely' dipped into the pan of water it works fine , however I don't know if the same would work with the hand sander - as nowadays they seem to have done away with the green wire !

The paint sounds pretty much the normal quality of the Ministry. You are already at risk of over restoring the car! Sad but true. So a few tidy ones would go some way to improving the standing of the machines in terms of quality. Sounds like you had a pretty good deal after a bit of a wait from what Root told me.
My tip would to be check the timing by measuring the TDC and thus BTDC. Every one I have had so far has been timed incorrectly and you cannot trust the pulley mark. That done and a tune up on the carb and they will tick over really slowly allowing gear selection and you can see startlingly nippy performance not many microcars can offer!

Looks like a nice car.  Be good to see how you get on.  Assume it is registered as a Trike already?

Due to a recent change in circumstances, I will be selling all of my Invacar stock and many mopeds and micros that I won't ever get around to improving.
Let me know if there is anything in particular that you need.

Ooo eck, Barry! Nothing nasty I hope. Got a fair spread of stuff tucked away there.

With referance to IC spares, I will back Stuart if he feels the stock needs saved for the future, as before. I do not think he ever got a provisional stock listing to understand what was there.

Just a small clot on the lung Al.  Looks like I will be OK on anticoagulants while we find out (perhaps) what went wrong.
Makes you think about what you are doing with lots of 'junk' which may be of good use to someone else.
I intend to just keep the things I really like and have a chance of using easily without vast amounts of time being spent.

The stock list of Invacar parts is one of those things on the back burner due to time.
I have spent much of this year driving from one University to another for my Triplet boys (18) whilst they decide on where to go.
The driving may not have helped my condition.

So, a big clear-out is in order.

A worry, but such things can be a one off condition. I am all to aware of realising having to many projects. Its quite cathartic to sell, finding time to concentrate on the few you really want and value, for what ever reason.

Firstly Barry, my best wishes mate, hope your sorted out soon ;) As for the wee car, I don't think I'm in need for anything just yet but ill remember your offer for future reference

Thanks for the kind words. I will no doubts do more to it than need be, Ill probably spend too much as well but as you said Al, I got a good deal so should be ok as long as I don't go over the top. Just paint and a general tidy inside will do me. I want to keep if for a while so not overly worried. As for the timing, It seems to idle smooth and very low at the moment and no gear crunching. The chap I got it from did clutch shoes and other bits and bobs.

One window frame has rotted at the bottom so ill need to get that off and remade/fabricated. Windows were easy to come out due to this so kind of worried about them going back in as I really don't know the correct way to remove and fit them, any help with this would be great.

It was still registered as Disabled but I stuck Tricycle on the changes part of the log book before sending it off so hopefully that'll be ok.

Many thanks and good luck with it Frazer.  Let me know if you need any photos for reference.  Is yours AC or Invacar?  Looks like normal handle bars.

Thanks Barry, it's an AC, it's complete I think apart from wheel trims but I have a pair of 10" minilights so should be fine, however I have taken a fair bit apart so hope I can get it all back together again haha again the Windows will be the hardest part as but at least I have the other side for reference.

The window rail is a common prob. Fortunately the whole thing will remove by screws / bolts. But the worse your rail, the more obstinate the fastners will be to undo. The system looks borrowed from BMC Mini and such. The door is pretty simple to remove if you need to get it upside down in a vice.

watching the telly other night . two yanks buy this Nippy moped thingy ( after a LOT of haggling ) and in the back of the garage was a IC .
If it was for sale the location would have to be sourced . as this guy seemed to have a collection of all things unusual !!!

Quite amazing how much damage has been done to this wee car over the years, shame the bodyshops didn't repair very well and looks like they gave the car a full paint each time it was in lol

Remember to push down on the handle bars to brake.
Pushing your foot on the bulkhead makes very little difference to braking.  It feels like it should though.

I think this is one of the reasons they only allowed disabled drivers, preferably with no legs,  to drive these  :(

Sounds like the American Pickers was the Ian Hellings one. If so there was an Iso floating about too. His take on the whole thing was quite amuzing.

Yep, IC were painted as often as they were washed. Much of the damage for and aft was caused by stone age comedians thinking they were the first to have the idea of moving these small cars somewhere daft, ignoring that the 'owner' was invalid. I myself have helped a guy in Bristol retrieve his Type 70 from the middle of a roundabout. The same thing used to happen to microcars, including Faringdon, until I smacked one of the said comedians in the face. He did not find that very funny and his mates all ran away. Of course now I would go to prison for standing up for myself. But at the time the town received the message and understood. Leave the cars alone or suffer the consequences.

It must be said that some of the folk who had the IC were not that good at driving, and of course it was not their car. If they had a fail, they just got given another one. So reference baiting IC drivers. Not a good idea, as once issued with a type 70, they had the means of retribution, could catch up miscreants and drive into them full in the knowledge they had a nice new IC waiting at the agents. Disabled one, able bodied 0. I have heard that tale from several disabled folk.

Like I say these iIC are more than interesting cars, they are social history, if you bother to listen to folk talk.

So the little cars doing well, body all repaired and in primer ready for paint, hopefully next week.

I got my seat back from the trimmers, looks good, hopefully will suit the car when it's all done.

I'm after the original as possible outside look but a nice cream and black interior. I want it clean but slightly modern/up to date too.

You know when things are becoming collectable when owners start presenting them in a better state than that which they were in use during their heyday.  This is far to good a finish. The Government just slapped another load of paint over the top.

Its a moot point, but with a good finish the cars do have style to show off. Get passed the familiarity and see them as fresh eyes will, and they stand up better than some more desirable cars for looks. So now some owners are going to prove this, producing well presented cars.

I was advised not to restore it and just use it as is as the money I would need to put into it would be more than what it's worth. He was right, I have spent more than that so far but I don't plan on moving it on anytime soon. So I doubt many will restore these as yet because it's just worth it at the moment. I want to show mine at as many Scottish shows as the weather will allow this year. I know it would still get plenty attention as there just not seen anymore but I'd rather it was nice and shiny. Mine had 6 layers of paint and after taking it all off the amount of damage to the body says that every crack made, they painted the whole car again.
It's now back in its shiny blue so won't be long before it's built back up again.

Looks really good. The dull finish of the standard Gov car never made these look anything as good as they could have been. Money spent. I would say its a long term investment, its not going to loose money like many things you can buy. Be that as it may, we all have the right to overspend on things, that is why its a hobby.

I've been busy, wee cars fair coming on.

Since last post I've taken all the masking off, fitted the boot, bonnet, roof, all glass, door handles, rear lights, new crystal angel eye headlights, clear LED indicators and number plates. Still a few little jobs still to do like new rubber flooring, door rubbers and paint and fit the new wheels and tyres.

Hope you like.

Ok last post as its a good one.

Wee car flew it's MOT with no advisories on Thursday.

Insured it for £55 per yer with 3 drivers and 3000 mile limit.

Taxed it as historic so it was free.

So it's now one of very few actually on the road which is an amazing feeling.

Took it to its first show yesterday and it got an outstanding thumbs up from everyone.

Anyway, once again, a huge thanks to Stuart For helping me find the car.
