I see the Peel P50 is EME 583B one of my old cars now owned by Andy Carter. Fancy letting that fat slob drive your car!  The programe stinks too. I bet they will make fun of microcars like they do any other unusual vehicles. ;D

Actually I heard Clarkson thought it was great.  It's not done in pi$$ take mode.

I quite like Clarkson.  I went to see TG live and off camera he's a gent.  Are you more into Kerry Katona and other high brow celebreties?!!

Who's Kerry Katona? Is it Jean's rusty pickup thing in the Bubble Building?

It seems, Kerry Katona is not a rusty thing in a shed Stuart, isn't it ?    ;) ;)

Kerry katona is a rather grotesque celeb (if you can call her that) who seems in derive income from selling stories of herself to OK magazine. Oh and awful adverts plugging Iceland food products.  Probably more nutritional value in eating the packaging.

I think I'd prefer to eat my own eyes than read/watch anything about this old trout.

And,

Peels are known by the very few.  Seeing as Top Gear pulls in what 3M viewers? (5% of the population) then the P50 is set to become extremely well known.  Then it'll get aired globally.  If mine didn't knock out it's big end on the IoM I'd have been tempted to take it out on Monday 19th just for a laugh.

With 20 odd P50's left I suspect Mr Carter may receive an enquiry or two.

I better get my engine out, opened and fixed.   Then I can run Kerry Katona over in my P50!!

I cant stand Clarkson either. TG used to be a program about motoring but now its just about watching those three clowns belting around a race track shouting whaaay haaayin a car that only a millionare could afford. Having said that, did anyone see that episode about the Dutch three wheeled thingy that has a cabine that leans on the bends whilst the two back wheels stay level, very whacky!. They all loved it so there is hope for them yet. What is that vehicle called??

your referring to the Carver.

I would much rather watch the current show than the boring half hour offering there was before. It is after all an entertainment show now, which it fulfills very well indeed.

As to their opinions regarding the Peel and other unusual cars,do you really think that theirs will be any different to the majority of joe public?
you know, the ones who never bought one when it was new and wouldnt be seen dead in one now?

What a dilema to have, not being able to remember how many you own! I asked because im curious to know what the differences are between the parachute dropped WW1 model and the later Brockhouse commercialy sold one apart from the lights ect.

Didn't the original Welbikes have spoked wheels, whereas later production models had solid ones.
Title: Re: Top Gear!!!
Post by: Dan Rodd on October 02, 2007, 02:14:23 PM
the first corgis had spoked wheels too,as i have one!
The welbike is totally different to the corgi, having a pair of pannier tanks with a pump to pressurise them to send fuel to the engine.
the engine in the welbike is a villiers junior de luxe, the one in the corgi is an excelsior spryt.
the welbike has no front brake and later ones have a rear mudguard.it also has a single tube with 2 fold out tubes for the handlebars.

The corgi has a large saddle tank, front and rear muguards, front and rear brakes, lights,a pair of long handlebars, and mostly disc wheels.
about 24,000 Corgis were built between 1946 and 1954.
only around 40 Welbikes are known to survive, and in good condition command prices of £6000 upwards.

And here he is (prolonged fanfare), the mad Corgi breeder himself, with (extra prolonged fanfare) his very favourite 1948 spoked wheeled example.......  :o

Thanks for that Dan, I have always had a soft spot for Corgis, I would like one very much but when ever they have been offered to me in the past my wallet has been empty, murphys law!  In fact there are a few things on your catalogue that I like, Scotts are very interesting machines and I'm also quite partial to an early Reliant. Is yours Aluminium bodied?

well i have several project Corgis for sale so if you want one at some point and have the cash let me know.Just sold my Scott on eBay infact. My Regal is a low mileage mk3,which is the first fibreglass one, still with an ash frame, looks a bit like a potato!

Call me pedantic, call me nit-picker, but surely Corgies were not parachute dropped in WW1 ? Anyway, I think in "Blue Murder at St Trinians" there is a fellow arriving at the Ministry on what looks like a Corgi, and very nice too! Later on we see George "Arthur Daley" Cole driving a light-coloured Heinkel, with some great shots of it. Luivverly

i too have just been and got the top gear mag and from the looks of it it will be a very good episode indeed!

there is several pics of clarkson driving the peel in the office, with some sort of device attatched to the exhaust presumably to reduce the smoke. Also a great one of him sat in it behind his desk at a meeting and another of him grinning with glee next to it,so i think that it should be shown in a good light, presumably because it enabled Jeremy to spend his whole day in a car!

Title: Re: Top Gear!!!
Post by: marcus on October 07, 2007, 08:41:52 PM
No, I don't have head lice. They could not stand it their and they all died! Yes, Borstal, above the site of the Shorts factory at Rochester where the Flying boats were made and operated, and where the local pub, The Canopus is still named after one of them. For younger forum members: we used to make things in England!
I have realised I git the film wrong. In " Blue Murder at St Trinians there are great shots, inside and out, of a Heinkel. If you want to see the Corgi, watch " The Titfield Thunderbolt". A man arrives at the Ministry on one, stops, then he and the doorman fold down the handlebars, lift it up and carry it in. All you Corgi fans...:enjoy!

Hi

I love Top Gear.

Who wouldn't laugh at the people carrier turned into a convertible or the cars turned into boats.

Even my wife loves Top gear and she has had years of crap old classics being dismanteled on the drive etc.

Makes me laugh anyway.

As I thought, Just a load of mickey taking. Why was there an extention to the exhaust? and it looked like some damage was caused to it. Still It was good to see my old EME again. ;D
Title: Re: Top Gear!!!

i dont think it was a bad feature at all.Clarkson seemed to really enjoy the Peel, didnt take too much of the mickey out of(ie didnt say it was crap)extolled the virtues of microcar ownership and got a Peel on to the most watched show on the BBC.
I was a little concerned about the bumps and knocks but Andy Carter isnt exactly short of a few quid is he!
The pipe by the looks of things was attatched to some sort of device that stopped the smoke from fogging the inside of the building.

What on earth are you talking about? The Peel couldn't have had a better feature.

Clarkson didn't have a bad word to say about it.  Superb piece.  As per usual funny angle.

Nice to see the Trident rep at the end.  The luxury model!! They all wanted one.  Hmm, good luck lads!!
Title: Re: Top Gear!!!

The pipe extension was a crude filter/emission reducer.  Health and safety crud.

Wasn't mega effective but allowed them to run EME in the building.

Oddly enough TG voted P50 as one of the worst cars ever.   So JC has U-turned somewhat.  Shame didn't have a Trident out on the streets as well but hey what gives.

Peels are now famous.  I soooo wish mine was road fit as I'd be out in it tomorrow!!  One for the future methinks..

What a hoot! One of the few TG program I have ever enjoyed. It was just a bit of fun, he could have absolutly slayed it if he was to seriously access it as a car but instead he graciously used the oppertunity to highlight the vertues of small cars. Come on, in our heart of hearts we all know that it is one of the most impractical cars ever made especialy now on todays roads but that dosnt stop us all loving it, thats part of its appeal! Peels always bring a smile to the face and that was certainly the case at the BBC. I felt a little sorry for Andy though when he kept scrapeing the walls and bumping into things but then I thought, Andys not daft, he is sure to get some repro orders out of the prog, John Humfreys looked keen! Only a grumpy old man would see it all as bad publicity for the microcar movement!

I'll stick to what I said. Would you have your P50 mucked about with yobs rocking it about and causing a jam in the road at the end? Very childish! There was'nt even a mention of the Peel Register or Rumcars, so how will punters, as P50 calls them find out more?  ;D,
Title: Re: Top Gear!!!
Post by: Dan Rodd on October 29, 2007, 01:48:56 PM
I would imagine that the majority of the British public couldnt care less about the Peel register or Rumcars, therefore it wouldnt get mentioned, just like how every other car tested by them doesnt get a list presented of all the clubs you can join.
And the behaviour of the people who came in contact with the Peel is pretty representative of everyone who isnt in the low membership of the rum and who knows what it is,which is why i stopped driving a Reliant, you couldnt go anywhere in it for fear of it being on its side when you went back to it.

No,i dont, but a large proportion of members of the R3W forum have had their cars tipped over, vandalised, moved or set on fire.Doesnt matter where you go,i drove all over the country in mine and reaction was the same.

Clarkson could have utterly ridiculed the P50 (as he did before) but chose to analyse it as a concept as opposed to a truly capable machine. A P50 is simply a covered moped.  A Scootacar is a covered motorcycle like the Schmitt/Treinkel.   He did say the lack of reverse was its major drawback.   They didn't really treat it terribly well which shows.  However it succeeded as a piece.

I think we need to realise only 46 P50's were assembled.    It was never a success. But now they are simply a window to a more optimistic  time.

The Trident however is in a different league through its styling.     As we all know anyone out there who wants a Peel has about as much chance as walking on the moon. So I suspect this coverage is simply a blip and will probably be forgotten shortly.

Great TV though..

it is amusing that all these people simply "must" have one now after watching the show.

and they all think they are readily available and for very little money, after all the car is very small, so why should it cost much?

the same thing happened in the USA after a show called "Monster Garage" bought a Trident shell from Andy Carter and then attempted to stuff a Hayabusa engine into it but failed and ended up blowing it up.
Lots of emails from people that simply had to have one. But thought the price would be about $2500.

What was nice about the TOP GEAR episode was that they had fun WITH it.  They did not make fun OF it.

Andy's now writing the odd piece for RUM in respect of the Peel register.

I suspect you'll get the full rundown in a forthcoming RUM mag. So indeed why not join to find out?!

N.B.  If JC was smoking (and I mean smoking) around the West End in a Scootacar then the same thing wouldl have happened.

I.E.  I want one!!!   Isn't it odd that once perceived worthless junk is now so revered.

And finally both my Peels will be shortly up for sale.

I thought the mickey-taking was reasonably humorous and affectionate, and completely in line with the banter all of us micro-nauts use of each other's chosen bug. I was cocerned about any damage, but that is between the BBC and Andy. JC made good points about the large size of modern "Mini" cars, and the fact that the P50 has to pay Congestion Charge, whereas the large Lexus/Toyota does not have to because of its (limited) electric capability. They did show that small can be fun and interesting to all. TV always trivialises EVERYTHING it covers, but we at least got a P50 on TV, and we all have to be grateful for that, and the fact that JC seemed genuinely enthusiastic. We should all contact BBC and ask for more interesting/unusual/classic cars.

Where do they get these values from? Didn't the last P50 on Ebay sell for around £16K!

seems there was a bit of chicanery going on with that one as well.
but yes it did "sell" at around £16K. (I seem to recall more like £14K)
It was apparently "supposed" to sell for more....maybe £20K but it did not happen.
Either that or the purpose of the auction was to use a public source (eBay) to establish a recent "Sale Price" to be used for Insurance Appraisal purposes and the car was never intended to sold in the first place.
(if you want to insure your Peel for a lot of money, the Insurance company will ask for some sort of "proof" that the car is worth what you say it is and the best way to do that is show them a recorded "sale" at a public auction. How many other Peel P50s have appeared at public auction?† Anyone?)

Those involved know what I am talking about and I will leave it at that without naming names.

People that are willing to part with a real Peel seem absolutely intent on getting the highest possible price that anyone in the world might be willing to pay for it at anytime now or in the future.
Unfortunately the people that might be capable of paying crazy money don't seem interested in paying crazy money.
They want one for 50p too!
