Not sure why the rear wings were removed?

They not only removed the wings. Even the complete rear is removed. This was normal during the races in the sixties.
They did it to decrease weight of the car.

Also I have read that Tigers have very little clearance at best of times between wheels and wings, so a very small dent could jam the wheels and spoil the race, also improved air circulation

Marcus you are entirely right in all points. On lots of old racing pictures you see them driving without the rear!

Great pics, there's even a BMW 600 on the sidelines in the first photo.  :o
