Stainless welding.

There was mention a few days ago of wheather stainless steel could be welded to mild steel, I think the context was concerning a stainless steel heinkel floor. I had forgotten about it until today when I was watching a WW2 tank restoration program and they were welding a ferrous steel panel on a tank using stainless steel mig wire. I did some reserch and found that it is a common practice but not recommended for anything structual. Well there ya go, just dont jump up and down on that Heinkel floor!

         I think everyone has gone off at the wrong tack on this one, I know you car weld any matal to any metal, but the car you are talking about has a steel floor not a stainless steel floor, or am I missing somethimg ( comments please - printable )

As I remember Mike, the car had been fitted with a stainless steel floor. Could be mistaken.

I don't see why welding stainless to mild would be so bad.  The joint would be of an uneven alloy as the welding wire and parent material mix, but if you're welding to mild steel, it is fairly average stuff itself.

It seems to have the stainless steel floor changed to a normal steel one in the text.
Must have been the authors miss-type?
Who ever has it for sale must read the Forum and realised the mistake.

Ah yes, Bobbybubble, Tank resto...the British comet tank, every so often Britain produces agood tank, and that one was good in its day. That programme has been on a few times. When they weld thick tank panels they have do do several parallel beads, it's interesting to see the results close up, like in the Imperial War museum. It must use alot of electricity. The trick with welding stainless is to know what type /grade it is. It now sounds like the seller had just made a slight error.

I have had a chat with one of my customers ( Tricket Welding, Sandford, nr. Wareham, Dorset) they specialise in classic car welding.

At the mo they have these cars in ;-

Bristol, Singer Chamois, Aston, VW lots of Minis and other older pre war cars I don't recognise.

The boss Nigel says it is O.K. to weld Stainless to normal steel, it isn't done very often but would be as strong a weld as normal.

You learn something every day ( well some days )

Still having problems looking at the full forum, so may open another account and see if it works.

I cleared the cookies on my computer and logged onto the forum, I could see everything fine as it didn't recognise me and treated me as a guest.

As soon as I logged in as Inacoma it blocked me from seeing the main forum pages and I can only see things in the 10 most recent posts again.

Yes John, I had a couple of glitches where it did not recognise me, it asked who I was, but when I told it my name it said someone else was already using it, but it did not seem to let me tell it that the someone else was me! I pratted around for a while and eventually got in, but I have no idea what i did, and when it happened again a couple of weeks ago I went round the houses again! If I could remember how I got back in I would be happy to advise! I guess you are probably a bit like me: not that familiar with PCs and software, but I have been using this forum for about 2 years and once you get familiar, it all starts making sense....as far as anything to do with PCs make sense! Well worth it though.

Have missed the fix of being on the forum, ( I wonder if my wife put the child security thingy on it to curb my adiction)

The only way I could get the forum to work was to close my account and reregister with new details.

Great to be able to see everything in the context that it's writen in, not just reading individual posts in random.
